As Louisville's only private, non-profit organization that is also open admissions, the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) chooses to accept all canines and felines in need.

Unfortunately, thousands of unwanted and neglected animals come through KHS' doors each year. While many pets will be placed in permanent, loving homes, sadly, some will not find homes.

In an effort to combat the Louisville area’s staggering pet overpopulation problem, KHS now collects a $25 admission fee. The $25–per-animal fee funds S.N.I.P. (Spay-Neuter Incentive Program), the state’s most aggressive spay-neuter campaign of its kind.

For individuals surrendering litters of puppies or kittens, KHS offers a spay-neuter voucher program. KHS will reimburse those admission fees upon verification that the mom or dad of the litter has been altered at one of our clinics.

You too can help stop pet overpopulation-- KHS strongly encourages you to spay or neuter your pet. In addition to the proven health benefits that it offers your dog or cat, such as extended life expectancy, spaying and neutering helps prevent the perpetuation of pet overpopulation. Once admitted to KHS, all animals undergo health and behavior evaluations, and if deemed adoptable, pets are placed for adoption at one of our eight adoption locations. Adoptable animals are held as long as health and behavior permits, so there is no set time period for them to find a new home.

KHS can pick up owned dogs and cats in Metro Louisville, Henry, Trimble and Spencer Counties, Monday - Friday. The fees are:

  • $50 in Metro Louisville
  • $75 outside of Jefferson County
