Guaranteed Attempt to Place (GAP) Program
Though the Kentucky Humane Society has a wonderful adoption rate when compared to other open admissions shelters, when surrendering a dog or cat to KHS, the Guaranteed Attempt to Place (GAP) program is the only way to guarantee the option of your pet being placed for adoption.
The program not only provides individuals with the assurance that the animal will be placed for adoption, but also the opportunity to monitor the pet's progress and reclaim the animal if he or she is not adopted or develops any health or behavioral problems.
In order to be accepted into the GAP program, your pet must pass a health and temperament evaluation, which costs $25 (non-refundable). If your pet passes the evaluation, enrollment in the GAP program is a $75 non-refundable fee. There is an additional $25 fee for pets without current vaccinations.
Within 20 minutes, the owner will know if the animal meets adoptability criteria and can be placed up for adoption for a period of 15 days. All animals are spayed or neutered before being placed for adoption at one of the eight KHS adoption locations.
If the animal is not adopted within the 15-day
period, the owner has the option of reclaiming
the pet, paying an additional $75 fee for a second and final 15-day GAP adoption period, or surrendering ownership of
the animal to KHS.
If an animal is deemed
to be un-adoptable for any reason during the placement process, the owner must reclaim the animal
or choose to
surrender him to KHS.
