Every day, some adoptable pets watch people searching for their new best friend and hope that they’ll look at them. But, time after time, they get overlooked.

In January 2006, the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) launched the "Lonely Hearts Club" to highlight special needs animals, so they too can find permanent, loving homes. Pets become members of this club due to special health or behavior needs, such as physical challenges, or simply because they have been overlooked by adopters and need extra help finding their lifelong friend.

Each "Lonely Hearts Club" member's story is highlighted by staff and shared on a cage card so prospective adopters can learn more about these special pets. For many club members, their adoption fees are discounted so they can find a home more quickly. Special needs pets, once in the club, are typically adopted within 11 days!

"Lonely Hearts Club" members can offer a lifetime of companionship, if only given a chance. Like any other pet, these special needs animals want nothing more than to find a wonderful family who will shower them with love and attention.
