The S.N.I.P. Clinic completed 6,000 surgeries during its first year of operation! Now the clinic is increasing its goal to 11,000 spays/neueters in 2008. Click here to learn more.

The most critical issue facing pets in Louisville and surrounding counties today is finding enough permanent, loving homes for them all. Through adoptions, education programs and spay/neuter efforts, the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) is offering proactive solutions to this pet overpopulation crisis, but there's so much more to be done.

As part of this strategy, the new, full-time KHS "S.N.I.P. Clinic " is dedicated entirely to spay/neuter efforts.

As the region's first clinic of its kind, the S.N.I.P. Clinic's high-quality, high-volume approach is a milestone, as the area's first program large enough to successfully combat pet overpopulation by having the singular focus of providing affordable spay/neuter surgeries for low-income individuals.

Studies show that most pet owners who have not spayed or neutered their pets have not done so because
of income or access barriers.

PIT BULL POLICY:
Because of the overpopulation of this breed in our area and the public safety risk an unaltered dog can pose, no pit bull will be turned away as a S.N.I.P. Clinic client, regardless of the owner’s financial situation. KHS will reserve several surgery spots each day to perform free pit bull surgeries for those who cannot afford the low-cost rates. We expect to complete well over 500 free pit bull surgeries this year.

Partner Programs

Regional Transport
Through the S.N.I.P. Clinic Regional Transport Program, we travel within a 90-mile radius of Louisville. We transport dogs and cats from specified locations in communities across the region to the S.N.I.P. Clinic, where we perform their sterilization surgeries, and then return them to the location the next day, where owners pick up their animals.

The transport service is FREE to official Transport Partners, who also receive discounted surgery fees and priority scheduling. To find out how your organization can become a Transport Partner, please contact us at (502) 636-FIX1 or via email at lwallace@kyhumane.org. If you're a rural client wanting to have your pet fixed, see your local animal group for scheduling and pricing information.

Urban Transport
The S.N.I.P. Clinic Urban Transport Program travels to areas in Jefferson County that are most in need of low-cost spay/neuter services. The transport service is FREE to individuals living in the targeted areas. Please contact us at (502) 636-FIX1 to find out when our transport vehicle will be in your neighborhood.

SEEKING PARTNERSHIPS...

Success of the Urban Transport program will depend upon partnerships with individuals and organizations in these targeted communities. KHS currently is seeking partnerships in these areas of Louisville with groups, businesses and organizations of kinds, including church and community groups: 40202, 40203, 40210, 40211, 40212, 40215 and 40208.

If you are interested in establishing a partnership, call (502) 636-0278 or e-mail lwallace@kyhumane.org.

Why Spay and Neuter…?

Because honestly, they’re just not going to do it themselves. But, if your pets knew the benefits, we think they would!

  • Spaying or neutering allows your pet to live a longer, healthier life; an average of 3-5 years longer for cats and 1-3 years longer for dogs!
  • Neutering your dog also keeps him from getting any bad publicity! Did you know that intact male dogs are almost 3 times more likely to bite than their neutered counterparts?
  • In female dogs and cats, the risk of mammary gland tumors and ovarian and uterine cancer is reduced and can be completely eliminated if they are spayed before the first heat cycle.
  • The risk of testicular cancer is completely eliminated in male dogs and cats. (No testicles, no cancer!)

The benefits to you and your pet are clear.

But, you should also be aware of the benefits to the animals in our region. Each year, literally thousands of animals are euthanized right here in our area because there simply are not enough homes for them all.

This tragic situation can only be eliminated through a targeted, high-volume, spay/neuter program. Not even KHS, the state’s largest animal adoption agency, can adopt our way out of this crisis. This problem must be addressed at the source with sterilization. Pets can’t practice “safe sex,” so they need our help to reduce the overpopulation until there are enough homes for every adoptable animal.

For the love of your pet, and the pets in our community, please have the companion animals in your home spayed or neutered.
