| Looking for the right “home away home” for your furry friend? Want to make sure that your pet has a great stay? Here are some tips to help you ensure your lifelong friend enjoys his vacation at your selected boarding facility:
First, visit the facility and choose the right boarding option for your furry friend. If your pet has any special needs or requires any special care, be sure to tell the facility so they can properly accommodate you. For instance, if you have a geriatric pet, you may want to choose a guest room that is fully visible to staff members at all times so they can constantly monitor your pet.
Make your reservations early. Most kennels book up during the holidays and vacation times, so don’t wait until the last minute. When booking your pet’s stay, verify what you should bring to the kennel such as immunization records, special food, medication, bedding and toys.
Learn what immunizations are required so you can ensure your pet is up-to-date on all required vaccinations before boarding. For example, most kennels require a bordatella vaccine to avoid the spread of “kennel cough,” so it’s best to have your dog vaccinated at least two weeks before the first day of boarding.
Leaving parents and the comforts of home can create stress for your beloved pet. Even though kennel staff members will check on your pet regularly and lather them with attention, it’s not uncommon for pets to experience signs of stress since it’s an unfamiliar environment. Increased or decreased appetites, loose stool, lethargy or even destructive chewing can occur. But, most dogs adjust quickly and enjoy a mini-vacation from home in a new environment with new canine friends. Just make sure to give your pets plenty of love and attention when you pick them up!
Label all personal items with a permanent marker so they can be returned to you.
Bring a favorite toy or familiar blanket for your pet so they have a little piece of home during their stay. But, rawhides can present digestive problems in some instances, so leave those toys at home where you can supervise your pet. Instead, opt for a stuffed KongTM or another favorite toy while boarding.
Before leaving, provide an emergency contact and learn about the facility’s procedure for treating an ill pet. If your pet becomes ill, the kennel needs a way to reach you or an emergency contact person who can make decisions in your absence.
Avoid long, emotional goodbyes , since they may upset your pet and cause more stress.
Relax and enjoy your trip or vacation! Remember that you are leaving your pet in the hands of capable professionals.
