February 27, 2008 (Louisville, Ky.) The Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) wants to take the bite out of your dog, literally…and also stop him from chewing everything, eating anything and leaving “presents” in the house. Beginning March 3, KHS will take a humorous approach to address such common and often challenging issues for dog owners with its new advertising campaign.

Last year, KHS generated buzz with its racy advertising campaign for the S.N.I.P. Clinic, the area’s first full-time, public spay/neuter clinic. Now, one year later, KHS is at it again – but this time to increase awareness about its comprehensive behavior training program. The campaign not only pokes fun at canine behavior “problems,” but also encourages pet owners to address them through positive reinforcement training. That’s because behavior problems are one of the primary reasons pets are surrendered to animal shelters.

”Behavior ‘problems’ are really just common canine behaviors that most people don’t have the resources to address themselves,” said Ursa Marr, KHS Behavior Manager. “Through behavior training, we can strengthen the owner-pet bond and help more pets remain in their current homes, so there are fewer pets surrendered due to issues like housetraining and destructive behaviors.”

Established in 2000, the KHS Behavior Training program helps over 500 pet clients each year through education and positive reinforcement training. KHS offers classes for pets of all ages and ability levels, such as “Positively Puppies” and “Manners for Life,” basic obedience for puppies and adult dogs; “Feisty Fido” for dog-aggressive canines; agility training and more. The six-week courses take place at various times throughout the year in the Highlands, Jeffersontown, South Louisville and Springhurst. KHS also offers in-home, private training, including sessions for aggression. All behavior training fees help benefit the KHS mission.

”Behavior training is just one part of the equation to solve the largest issue facing companion animals in our community – finding enough homes for them all,” said Lori Kane Redmon, KHS President. “The only way we can reduce the number of unwanted pets is through large-scale spay/neuter, increased adoptions, and expanded and continuous education.”

The comical ads, designed by Creative Alliance, can be seen on billboards and bus shelters across Louisville. The radio spot can be heard on WXMA, WDJX, WAMZ, WVEZ and WLUE throughout 2008.
