Updates on Penelope & Buck

"Buck," a two-year-old tabby, was found as a stray in Eminence, Ky. on a cold March day. He was vomiting worms and appeared to have an old wound on his right hind leg. Once at KHS, the veterinary team determined that Buck had intestinal worms and possibly had an old gunshot wound. After being treated and making a full recovery, Angus was placed up for adoption, so that he could find a loving family and never be homeless again.

As fate would have it, Steven and Jae Wolff stumbled upon Buck's photo while visiting KHS' website and decided they had to meet him. One of their cats had recently passed away, and they wanted to take in another cat who was in need of a new home. Though Steven had fallen in love with and adopted a female cat, "Chanel," from KHS only a few weeks earlier, Buck looked so much like their recently deceased cat that they fell in love again.

“We drove all the way from the East End to the Dixie Highway Feeders Supply because we had to see this cat,” Steven shared.

Jae, Steven’s wife, immediately fell for Buck as soon as they met! They renamed him "Angus" and say the name fits so well since he is such a “big, beefy cat.” His hefty size, about 15 pounds according to Steven, was another feature reminiscent of their lost cat. Though they never expected it, the Wolff family was welcoming yet another new addition into their home.

Steven says that, at first, Angus seemed like he might be a bit too active for their household. Their three other cats are a bit older (6, 8, and 13 years old) than Angus, but he still wanted to play with them as if they were as spry as his two-year-old body!

“He is definitely all action,” says Steven. He adds though that Angus has adjusted well and realized that the other cats can’t quite play as hard as he can. All of the feline friends have become accustomed to one another and are getting along great.

KHS wishes all the best for Angus and his new family!

“Penelope," a two-month-old white boxer, was thrown from a moving vehicle on a cold winter day. She hit the pavement, skidded and sustained a large wound on her head. Thankfully, a Good Samaritan who witnessed the accident, contacted KHS for help.

A KHS rescue officer responded to the scene and transported the injured puppy to KHS for medical attention. The KHS veterinary team examined Penelope and quickly realized that in addition to a head injury, she also suffered from malnourishment and demodectic mange. Demodectic mange is a skin condition caused by microscopic mites that live in hair follicles. If left untreated, it can cause extensive hair loss and severe skin irriation.

The KHS staff immediately treated Penelope's head injury, as well as began treatment for the demodectic mange by giving her medicated baths. Soon after, she was placed in a temporary foster home so they could continue treatment for mange, as well as provide her with plenty of food and love.

While at the Callaways, Penelope continued to receive medicated baths and treatment for the mange. "She did quite well and definitely gained weight," shared Mike Callaway.

After months of foster care, Penelope had a clean skin scrape and no longer suffered from mange. Penelope was placed up for adoption, ready to find her forever home.

She was adopted by the Stites family in May! Congratulations to Penelope and her new loving family!
