Touching Lives

The Kentucky Humane Society is dedicated to serving companion animals and the community. Here is just one of the many stories where KHS has made a difference, touching lives...

From Problem Pet to Lifelong Friend: Willard
With cap and dog bone, Willard, a playful 1-year-old Bassett Hound, received his diploma on graduation night at the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS). Yet, it was more than just a celebration for Willard and Rose Clemens, his owner and best friend, since the young canine started out as a true problem pet.

During the summer of 2004, the Clemens family adopted Willard, ready to give him a permanent, loving home. Yet, like most pups, the young hound was a handful with his incessant barking and destructive chewing. Extremely frustrated and distressed, Rose was unsure how to remedy his behavior problems and saw no end in sight. Then, her husband, at his wit’s ends, gave Rose an ultimatum – the constant destruction and barking must stop or Willard must find another home.

Not willing to give up, Rose and her daughter enrolled Willard in the Kentucky Humane Society’s “Manners for Life,” a fun beginner-level obedience course for dogs over five months. During the six-week class, a strong bond developed between Willard and Rose, and they soon became inseparable.

The Bassett Hound learned the basics, such as sit, stay and down, as well as coming when called, loose leash walking and so much more. Rose became more educated on resolving negative canine behaviors and using positive reinforcement to reward Willard.

“The class was a tremendous help,” said Rose from Louisville. “I definitely understand him more, and I learned how to talk to him, work with him and settle him down, [which was] one of the big issues we had.”

Shortly after celebrating his first birthday in June, Willard became a graduate of the KHS Behavior Training program, completing his “Manners for Life” course. He also received the “Class Clown” award for his goofy disposition and outgoing personality. Rose could not be more proud of her stubborn, yet lovable, hound.

“There’s no way we would still have [Willard] without having gone through behavior training,” said Rose. “I don’t know what we do without him now…We just love him!”

The KHS Behavior Training program gave Willard a second chance, and now he’s enjoying life as a happy pet and lifelong friend for the Clemens family.

Whether it’s teaching basic obedience, resolving problem behaviors or teaching your old dog new tricks, KHS’ comprehensive behavior training program is designed to strengthen the bond between pets and owners through education and positive training. KHS offers a variety of classes for pets of all ages and ability levels, with classes starting throughout the year at locations all over town, as well as in-home, private training.
