Keep Your Best Friend From Spending the Holidays Behind Bars...

The holiday season is a time of celebration...but what about the unwanted pets who have to spend the holidays behind bars?
Some just want a second chance at being a best friend, and others have never even had a place to call home. Yet, they ALL want one thing -- to find a wonderful family who will shower them with love and attention.
Please consider a monetary gift to help our furry friends this holiday season.
An average of 40 unwanted animals are surrendered to KHS every single day...and KHS cannot care for them without the support of generous donors like YOU.
Make a donation TODAY in the holiday spirit to support our furry friends during the cold winter months!
- Make a holiday donation in honor of a loved one (even your pet!). Warm the heart of an animal-lover by honoring them with a gift to KHS in their name. Click here to make a gift donation online.

- Collect and donate much needed items from our "Sit Up & Beg" wish list. Click here to find out what KHS needs to care for the animals.
For more information, contact Database Manager Laura Zartman at (502) 515-3144. Click here to learn more about how you can donate to KHS.
All gifts are tax deductible and greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Pets Looking for Homes
Every single day at KHS, there are over 200 pets looking for homes. Here are just a couple of our adoptable pets...
Ernie, an adorable 8-month- old grey tabby, wants to go home with YOU! Won't you be his new best friend? He’s an extremely affectionate and playful kitten who would be happiest indoors. Ernie can’t wait to find a loving home where he’ll get plenty of attention, and of course, playtime. He's great with children and appears to get along with other cats and dogs, so this lovable kitty would be a wonderful addition to your home. Neutered and microchipped, with up-to-date vaccinations, Ernie is ready to join a wonderful family TODAY! Ernie can't wait to meet you, so come visit him at the Kentucky Humane Society's main campus! Or, call (502) 366-3355 for more information.
Andy, a sweet 4-year-old boxer mix with the most gorgeous brindle coat, is looking for her forever home! She is very friendly and easygoing, and ready to join an active family that will give her plenty of attention and exercise. Andy is already housebroken and would do best with children 6 years and older since she can be a little shy and nervous at times. Spayed and microchipped, with up-to-date vaccinations, this sweetheart can't wait to be your new best friend! Andy would make a wonderful pet and lifelong friend, so come visit her today at the Hikes Point KHS-Feeders Supply adoption site! Or, call (502) 366-3355 for more information.

Touching Lives
Happy Beginnings: Kaiser
Dear Kentucky Humane Society,
I wanted you to know that this will be a wonderful Christmas for me.
I was adopted in July by Matt P., who has become my best buddy! You had named me Jack, but Matt changed my name to Kaiser. He is a firefighter and works 24 hours every third day. When he's working, my "grandparents" take very good care of me. They have a big yard where I can run and run some more.
I now weigh close to 90 pounds, but think I'm supposed to sit in everyone's lap!
I am loved VERY much, and everyone thinks I'm a beautiful dog!
Thank you,
Kaiser

To the Rescue! Stories & Updates
Every month, KHS helps hundreds of animals in need. Here are just a couple of our rescue stories...
Ariel, a sweet 5-year-old Boston terrier discovered on a Louisville roadside with visible injuries , thankfully recovered from a severe bone infection in late October. Previously featured in the PAW STREET JOURNAL's fall edition and October's KENNEL CHRONICLES, this sweet dog finally has found her life-long home!
Nick R. of Louisville was devastated when Shelby, one of his beloved dogs of 8 years, passed away due to cancer. After reading the PAW STREET JOURNAL, Nick was so moved by Ariel's story that he just had to meet this resilient dog.
Wanting to find a new friend for his 8-year-old Boston terrier named Chopper, Nick knew that Ariel might be the perfect match for them...and she was! Nick adopted Ariel in November, ready to give her a great home. Congratulations to Ariel, Chopper and Nick!
Three Siamese kittens were abandoned at KHS in late November, barely old enough to open their eyes. KHS staff immediately placed the 4-week-old kittens, named "Holly," "Jolly" and "Molly," into foster care, where they are being nurtured until they reach the minimum age and weight limit for spaying and neutering.
Look for more rescue stories and updates in the next KENNEL CHRONICLES and our quarterly newsletter, the PAW STREET JOURNAL!

Focus on Volunteers:
What's Your New Year's Resolution?
…Whatever you resolve to change in 2006, KHS can help.
Ready to Stop Smoking?
Try Canine Coaching, Clerical Assisting, or “Pet of the Week” Photography to keep your hands busy!
Whether you’re teaching a dog good manners, entering important data or taking the best photos to help find our animals permanent homes, KHS will keep you so busy that you won’t have the empty hands or the time to smoke.
Looking to Lose Weight?
“Walk a Hound, and Lose a Pound!” KHS can provide you with an exercise opportunity that’s much more fun and rewarding than going to the gym.
Sign up for our Canine Coach (dog walking) program and commit to being fit and healthy. The American Heart Association states that taking 10,000 steps a day can significantly improve your health. Why not share those steps with a dog who needs a break from his cage, while giving him much needed socialization and attention?
Want to Give Back to the Community?
Through volunteering, you not only help the animals, but you also provide an invaluable service to KHS staff.
What are you waiting for? Get a jump start on your new life by signing up to attend our upcoming Volunteer Orientation session on Tuesday, January 7 @ 5:30 p.m.
Contact Volunteer Manager Christina Weyrick-Cooper at (502) 515-3145 to make your resolution TODAY!
