Pets Looking for Homes
Dottie, a sweet 2-year-old Rottweiler mix, wants to join a great family today! Won’t you be her new best friend? Dottie is very friendly and playful and can't wait to find an active household where she'll get plenty of exercise and attention. She gets along with other dogs, but would be best with children six years and older. Spayed and microchipped, with up-to-date vaccinations, all this lovable dog needs is a a great place to call home! Dottie would make a wonderful pet and lifelong friend, so come visit her today at the Kentucky Humane Society's Fern Creek Feeders Supply adoption site! Or, call (502) 366-3355 for more information.
Fiona, a loving 6-year-old shorthaired Manx, is ready to go home with YOU! She’s extremely affectionate and friendly and would love to be your lap cat. Fiona would be happiest indoors where she'll get plenty of love and attention. She plays well with children and appears to like other cats, so Fiona would be a wonderful addition to an already pet-friendly home or as an only pet. Spayed, microchipped and up-to-date on all vaccinations, this sweet kitty wants to find a good home today! Fiona can't wait to meet you, so come visit her at the KHS main campus or call (502) 366-3355 for more information.

Touching Lives
Happy Beginnings: Casper
Dear Kentucky Humane Society,
We adopted Casper (a.k.a. White Fang) in May. My daughter picked him out, and they have been inseparable ever since. I wanted to send a picture and a thank you to everyone who helped us with our adoption. Casper is like one of the kids. We adore him!
Sincerely,
Amy W.
From Problem Pet to Lifelong Friend: Willard
Willard, a playful 1-year-old Basset Hound, joined the Clemens family as a puppy in the summer of 2004. Yet,
like most pups, the young hound was a handful with his incessant barking and destructive chewing. The Clemens were ready to give up on Willard until they signed him up for the KHS "Manners for Life" behavior class. Now, the Clemens just adore Willard, who's enjoying life as a happy pet and lifelong friend, all due to behavior training!

To the Rescue! Stories & Updates

Snuggle Bear, who was abandoned at KHS with severe trauma to his abdomen and hind legs, recovered fully from his injuries and was adopted by a loving couple from Louisville in late June. To read more about his rescue story in the summer edition of the Paw Street Journal, click here.
Prince, an adorable 3-week-old German Shepherd mix, was abandoned at KHS in late July. The young pup immediately was placed in foster care and soon will be treated for worms. Prince will be fostered until his health improves and he reaches the minimum weight and age for neutering.
Two kits (baby raccoons) were discovered at a rural Jefferson County gas station and brought to KHS. KHS provided shelter, food and care for the young raccoons until released back into the wild.
Look for more rescue stories and updates in the next “Paw Prints” and our quarterly newsletter, the Paw Street Journal!

Focus on Volunteers: The Canine Coach Program
There are a lot of different pieces that make KHS work, from donors to adopters. Our wonderful volunteers are a huge part to the success of KHS, helping supplement nearly all that we do.
Tune in each month to learn more about a featured volunteer program and the individual volunteers who are making a difference in animals' lives!
Canine Coach
Would you rather not spend several hours a week at the gym? Do you have a huge love for dogs? The Canine Coach program could be for you!
With dedicated volunteers, KHS can ensure adult dogs are taken out several times a day. As the only source of interaction, socialization and outdoor exercise for the adult dogs waiting to be adopted, Canine Coaches undoubtedly help increase their chances of finding a permanent home.
Denise McFarland, a wonderful volunteer since 2002, has set the standard for the Canine Coach program. Volunteering three to five times a week, Denise takes adult dogs for walks outside, teaches them basic manners and helps them become the type of pet most adopters prefer. In 2004 alone, she walked over 450 dogs!
KHS truly appreciates all of the Canine Coaches' hard work, dedication and kindness! If available, even just one day a week, please consider becoming a Canine Coach, so you too can make a hands-on difference in a dog's life!
Click here for more information on becoming a volunteer. To get involved, contact Volunteer Director April Boots at (502) 515-3145.
