Focus on Volunteer Programs:
It's Raining Cats & Kittens - Become a Foster Parent Today!

While kittens are so adorable and can bring such joy to one's life, there is a true epidemic in our community and nationwide -- "kitten season." Beginning in the spring, female cats become pregnant and then give birth, flooding KHS and local animal shelters with hundreds of homeless kittens.

With hundreds of cats and kittens coming through our doors, we desperately need foster parents TODAY!

Won't you open your home and your heart to care for a feline friend (or friends) in need?

  • We Rely on Wonderful People like YOU to Foster Animals!
With so many kittens too young to be adopted out, as well as adult pets who just needs a little extra time before being placed for adoption, foster care volunteers make all the difference.

  • Time Commitments Vary, so Anyone Can Foster!
Whether you can provide a temporary home for a few days, a few weeks or a few months, you can help out! Plus, you don't need to attend a volunteer orientation to get involved with the KHS Foster Care program.

  • Foster Families are Just Like Your Family!
Most foster parents work full-time, have other (fully vaccinated) pets and are true animal lovers...just like you!

  • Students Can Receive Community Services for Fostering Animals!
What a terrific way to serve the community! And, you can do it at home!

  • It's Easy to Get Involved with Our Foster Care Program! Just click here to learn more and download our foster parent application.

Unable to foster at this time? Then, click here to make a donation online today!

Help KHS provide shelter, food, medical care and more during "kitten" season" and throughout the year. The more money you give, the more animals we can save. It's as simple as that.

Pets Looking for Homes
Every single day at KHS, there are over 300 pets who want to find lifelong homes. Here are just a couple of our adoptable pets...

Kia, a sweet 3-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback mix, is a CANINE CLOWN!  A happy-go-lucky dog, Kia loves to entertain.

Kia is already housebroken and looking for a loving family who will give her plenty of attention and exercise. But, she would do best in a household without young children. Spayed, microchipped and up-to-date on all vaccinations, this sweetheart is ready to put on a show for you! Won't you be her new best friend? Come meet Kia by visiting the Kentucky Humane Society's main campus! Or, call (502) 366-3355 for more information.

Chocolate
, a 2-year-old shorthaired Manx, is such a sweetheart! Won't you be her new best friend? She's an extremely affectionate and easygoing kitty who's looking for a loving family to shower her with attention. Chocolate is good with children, but she would be happiest in a home without other cats. Spayed, microchipped and up-to-date on all vaccinations, Chocolate may just be the perfect match for you and your family!

Chocolate would make a wonderful pet and lifelong friend, so come visit her today at the Kentucky Humane Society's main campus! Or, call (502) 366-3355 for more information.

To the Rescue! Stories & Updates
Every month, KHS helps hundreds of animals in need. Here are just a couple of our rescue stories...

"Maggie," a stray adult terrier mix, was abandoned at a local grooming shop with an injured leg. With limited use of her rear left leg, the poor dog was brought to KHS for help. The KHS veterinary staff promptly performed a medical examination and determined that amputation was necessary. After surgery, Maggie was placed in foster care with Kim W. of Louisville for constant monitoring and a speedy recovery.

Once Maggie was settled in at her temporary home, foster parent Kim introduced Maggie to her mother, Linda, who immediately fell in love with the sweet three-legged dog. On March 14, Linda adopted Maggie, becoming her lifelong friend. KHS wishes them all the best!

"Frederick,
" a 7-month-old Gordon Setter mix, came to KHS in late January after his back right paw had been slammed in a door. Swollen and irritated, his paw appeared to be infected and needed immediate medical attention. KHS staff began Frederick on a regimented oral antibiotic therapy to treat the injury and avoid the spread of infection. After two months of treatment and foster care, the friendly dog has made a full recovery. Now up for adoption, Frederick is just waiting for the perfect family to take him home!

If you would like to learn more about Frederick and find out where you can meet him, call (502) 366-3355.

"Denali," appropriately named after Denali National Park in Alaska, is a beautiful 4-month-old Siberian Husky.  A member of the "Lonely Hearts Club," Denali is a special needs pet who may just steal your heart. Found on a farm in rural Kentucky, this stray pup was terrified and appeared to have had little contact with humans before coming to KHS. But, after being placed in foster care for socialization, Denali has made great strides, learning how to trust people. She now loves to give kisses too!

While Denali remains in foster care, she is ready to go home today. Yet, KHS recommends that she join an active family who already has another canine companion and no children under the age of six. If you're interested in learning more about Denali and find out where you can meet her, call (502) 366-3355 today!

Touching Lives
One of the many stories from adopters who have found a great companion at KHS...

Dear Kentucky Humane Society,

I’m writing on behalf of Ace and the rest of our family. When Ace was just six weeks old, we adopted him from KHS and fell in love. He was the best puppy, a little needy, but instantly a part of our family.

Then, when he was seven months old, we moved into a new apartment and discovered that he had a really bad barking problem while we were gone. We tried everything -- we got a huge crate, toys, and we even tried those ridiculous shock collars, only to throw them out the next day. But nothing worked, and we were devastated. We held out as long as we could, but our neighbors had small children and were not happy, and we were in no position to move. So, after hours of tears, we had a friend take Ace back to KHS.
