To the Rescue! Stories & Updates
Every month, KHS helps hundreds of animals in need. Here are just a couple of our rescue stories...
-Updates on Stories from the Summer PAW STREET JOURNAL-
"Dizzy," a five-year-old Yorkshire terrier, was stranded in the middle of a busy intersection near Louisville, Ky. Extremely dirty, timid and visible shaken, the stray dog was rescued by a kind Louisville couple and brought to the KHS main campus for medical attention.
Missing a substantial amount of fur, Dizzy had major scabbing on her neck, possibly caused by a skin infection. But, upon further examination by a KHS veterinarian, it quickly was determined that the dog's condition was much worse than anticipated.
Not only did she have a neck injury from an imbedded collar, Dizzy also suffered from a severe case of demodectic mange, a common but sometimes serious skin disease caused by mites that live in hair follicles. Furthermore, the poor dog appeared to have an old fracture in one rear leg, which causes her to run in circles at times.
Needing a regimented treatment plan, Dizzy immediately was placed in foster care with Brenda S., a dedicated KHS foster parent. The small dog received daily medicated baths to help remove layers of dead skin, as well as medication for her open sores and ulcers in order to avoid the spread of infection.
After months of foster care, Dizzy's condition has drastically improved. Not only has she begun to experience some fur regrowth, but the formerly timid dog also is much more outgoing and happy. However, Dizzy still remains in foster care where she continues to receive medicated baths at least twice a week. KHS wishes Dizzy a speedy recovery!
More updates on Dizzy to come in upcoming KENNEL CHRONICLES issues!
"Slider," a three-month-old Siamese mix, was discovered hovering near a restaurant in Fairdale, Ky., with a badly injured right front leg.
Promptly transported to the KHS main campus for help, the stray kitten was examined and X-rayed by the veterinary team. It was determined that the feline had sustained a severe fracture, where the bone was completely separated, near the top of his leg.
Unsure if Slider's leg could be saved, the veterinary team first wanted to place him in foster care to see if the fracture would heal on its own, as Slider was still a young and growing kitten. Furthermore, it appeared that the timorous feline would benefit from additional socialization and one-on-one attention.
After weeks of foster care with KHS foster parent Sherry L., Slider was brought back to the main campus for a follow-up exam and X-ray. Thankfully, the bone mended itself, so Slider's leg did not need to be amputated! Neutered and placed up for adoption at the Dixie KHS-Feeders Supply adoption site, Slider wad adopted by Jodie T. of South Louisville on August 4.
Extremely excited, Jodie looks forward to having Slider as a companion for herself, as well as for some of the abused children who she helps each day. As a therapist at Brooklawn Child & Family Services, Jodie hopes to help Slider come out of his shell even more while he offers therapeutic benefits for neglected children.
Recently, Jodie introduced Slider to a young boy at Brooklawn since they both have experienced difficult situations and been abandoned by their caretakers. "They were pretty timid at first but, by the end of the session, Slider was curled up in the boy's lap, purring away, and the boy was smiling " shared Jodie. "It really helped both of them."
Congratulations to Slider and Jodie!
"Missy," a four-year-old Basenji/Corgi mix, was abandoned at the KHS main campus on April 30. Malnourished and frightened, the adult dog appeared to have problems with her hips, causing limited mobility.
Upon review of her X-rays, a KHS veterinarian learned that Missy suffered from bilateral patellar luxation. This painful hereditary medical condition caused her kneecaps to constantly come out of their grooves.
Performing surgery on both knees, the KHS veterinary team successfully corrected both luxating patellas; thus, helping Missy avoid the possibility of developing canine osteoarthritis, a chronic, degenerative joint disease that causes pain and decreased flexibility in the affected joints.
After weeks of foster care and treatment, Missy was adopted by a loving family from Bonnieville, Ky. Upon meeting Missy, the entire family just fell in love with the sweet dog. "We're so happy to have her," said Scott P., father of three animal-loving children.
KHS wishes all the best to Missy and her new family!
"Nathan," a four-month-old boxer mix, was found near Trinity High School in Louisville, Ky., with an injured leg. Once at the KHS main campus, the rescue and veterinary teams performed a medical examination, concluding that his left rear leg had an epiphyseal (growth plate) fracture.
Unfortunately, due to the type of fracture, which commonly is seen in young, growing dogs, surgery was not a viable option. Thus, six weeks of foster care and cage rest was ordered for full recovery.
Going home with a great KHS volunteer duo, Heike and Andy P., Nathan received much-needed attention and cage rest. Completing a follow-up exam, a KHS veterinarian released Nathan from foster care since his injury was healed, though he may be prone to arthritis later in life. Ready to join a great family, the lovable pup was adopted by Crystal C. of Valley Station on July 9!
"Nathan is doing really good and getting so big," said Crystal. "He and my two-year-old son are the best of friends, too!"
Congratulations to Nathan for finding his permanent, loving home!
