To the Rescue! Stories & Updates
Every month, KHS helps hundreds of animals in need. Here are just a couple of our rescue stories...
In early November, a one-year-old black shorthaired cat came to KHS with an injured rear limb. A KHS veterinarian immediately examined "Neechi," determining that his right rear femur (knee) and tarsus (ankle) were fractured. Furthermore, the injury was infected and appeared to be over a week old. Thus, due to the fracture type and length of time left untreated, the KHS veterinary team concluded that amputation was necessary.
After undergoing surgery, Neechi was placed in foster care, where he received antibiotic treatment and plenty of cage rest. After three weeks in foster care, Neechi made a full recovery and was fully adjusted to life as a three-legged cat. This "Lonely Hearts Club" member was ready to find a permanent home!
Neutered and placed for adoption at the Clarksville KHS-Feeders Supply adoption site, Neechi was adopted by a loving family on December 12! Congratulations to Neechi and his new family!
"Ivy," a sweet five-year-old coonhound mix, came to KHS in early November heartworm positive. Heartworms are small parasites that reside in the right ventricle of the heart and nearby blood vessels. The disease can be serious and potentially fatal for infected dogs left untreated. Thankfully, Ivy received proper treatment and soon will take a new test to ensure that she is now heartworm negative.
If you are interested in fostering or adopting Ivy, call the main campus at (502) 366-3355 today!

Touching Lives: Shane
One of many stories from adopters who found a great companion at KHS...
Dear KHS,
I just wanted to thank everyone at KHS for assisting me with the recent adoption of a wonderful dog, "Shane." She's super sweet, well-behaved, already housetrained and has basic obedience skills. Unlike most people, I was looking for an older dog and found this beautiful two-year-old German shepherd mix at KHS! I wanted to let everyone know that she’s being lavished with love and adjusting to her new home and life very quickly.
Even though she’s a big dog, Shane is very calm and well mannered. My veterinarian said she is healthy, even though she seems to have suffered some "abuse" in her past. Shane does not have to worry about that anymore. As you can see by her photos, she is already spoiled! Everyone loves her!
I really want people to give older pets a chance! Many people return newly adopted dogs because they don't have the patience to housetrain or obedience train them. They should know that there are older pets out there, who aren’t high maintenance like puppies or young dogs.
I cannot understand how Shane's previous owners gave her up, but I am glad that they did. She is a sweetheart and a much-needed addition to my home! Once again, please thank everyone, and continue to do wonderful work for our four-legged friends!
Sincerely,
Diana M.
