Pets Looking for Homes
Every single day at KHS, there are over 300 pets who want to find lifelong homes. Here are just a couple of our adoptable pets...

Dakota, a handsome 1-year-old Beagle mix, is a FAITHFUL FRIEND! Reliable and relaxed, this sweetheart is a low-maintenance canine who just wants to be by your side.

Dakota has been with KHS since mid-December, and he doesn't want to spend another holiday alone! He's looking for a loving household where he'll get plenty of attention and exercise. Dakota is already housebroken and gets along with other dogs, but he would do best with children six years and older since he can be a little shy at first. Neutered and microchipped, with up-to-date vaccinations, this sweet dog can offer you a lifetime of companionship! Call KHS at (502) 366-3355 to learn more about Dakota and find out where you can meet him today.

Lucy, a talkative 7-year-old black and white shorthaired kitty, can't wait to join a great family! Won't you be her new best friend? She's so sweet and affectionate..and will just adore you! Lucy would be happiest indoors where she'll be showered with lots of love and attention. She's declawed on her front paws and appears to get along with other cats. Spayed and microchipped, with up-to-date vaccinations, all Lucy needs is a great place to call home! Lucy would make a wonderful pet and lifelong friend, so come visit her today at the Springhurst KHS-Feeders Supply adoption site! Or, call (502) 366-3355 for more information.

To the Rescue! Stories & Updates
Every month, KHS helps hundreds of animals in need. Here are just a couple of our rescue stories...

-Updates on Stories from the Winter-Spring PAW STREET JOURNAL-
"Greta," a stray 4-year-old Beagle, was rescued by KHS in Taylorsville, Ky., when she was discovered with a grave injury -- her right front paw appeared to be crushed. Immediately transported to KHS for medical attention, Greta was examined by KHS Veterinarian Dr. Tim Driver. He concluded that amputation of her right front leg was necessary in order to prevent the development of a bone infection.

After surgery, Greta was placed in foster care to ensure a speedy recovery. Once again healthy and ready to find a home, Greta soon was placed for adoption at the St. Matthews KHS-Feeders Supply adoption site. That's when Rhonda B. of Louisville met and fell in love with the sweet, three-legged Beagle.

While out shopping for Sadie, her 6-month-old Beagle, Rhonda decided to visit the adoptable pets. Then, she saw Greta. Rhonda proclaimed, "I was just drawn to her...probably because I formerly was a rehab nurse in Chattanooga [Tenn.], working with disabled children."

Unable to stop thinking about Greta, Rhonda came back the next day and adopted Greta, knowing that she would make a great companion for Sadie and herself.

Now, Greta goes by "Ilene" and has become quite the lap dog. She really seems to be enjoying life with Rhonda and Sadie. "Sadie has helped Ilene get more exercise and build her strength, " says Rhonda. "They've been so good for each other."

Congratulations to Ilene, Sadie and Rhonda!

"Miracle," a 2-year-old dilute tortoiseshell, apparently had hidden inside a car engine for warmth on a cold December morning. But when the vehicle was started, she sustained major wounds on her body from the fan belt. Wandering near the main campus, Miracle was rescued by KHS staff. She not only was missing a substantial amount of fur and skin on her back, but also had engine grease and tar covering her paws.

The KHS veterinary team examined the severity of her injuries and quickly began treatment for infection. Mandy Rumbaugh, one of the KHS staff members who rescued Miracle, shared, "We named her 'Miracle' because it truly was a miracle that she survived."

Thankfully, with meticulous treatment and a dedicated foster parent, Miracle will make a full recovery and should be ready for adoption in the next few weeks!

Touching Lives
One of the many stories from adopters who have found a great companion at KHS...

Dear KHS,

It has been almost a year since my parents adopted Rowdy, a Jack Russell Terrier, from you. They have been so thrilled with this little dog.

A year ago, my parents, Betty and Bill, came to you in grief after recently losing their Basset Hound. Your staff was able to match them with what has turned out to be the perfect dog for them.

It only took Rowdy two months to train my parents to cater to his every whim. And now, he is perfectly happy either playing with his huge amounts of toys or sleeping quietly on the couch with my mother.

A year later, Rowdy goes everywhere that they go, and he is as spoiled as any dog could be. He's as well behaved as a young Jack Russell can be!

Thanks to you, a senior couple who needed to fill a void, were united with a little dog who had a lot of love to give. They'll live together in love and happiness for years to come.

Sincerely,
Patricia K.
Louisville, Ky.
