Make a New Year's Resolution to Help Needy Animals!

After ringing in the new year, many people make a pledge to improve their health, change bad habits or give back to the community. In 2006, don't forget the thousands of needy animals who need YOUR help!

Make a New Year's Resolution to Get Involved with KHS Today!

Every day, an average of 40 unwanted animals come through our doors--each requiring medical care, food and shelter. And, each dog and cat longs to find their forever home where they'll receive all the love and attention that they so deserve. Won't you help make a difference in an animal's life?

KHS relies on the generosity of donors and volunteers like YOU. Please consider helping the animals in 2006, so they too can lead happy, healthy lives!

  • Make a donation TODAY to support KHS as we care for our furry friends, not only during the cold winter months but throughout the entire year! The more you give, the more animals we can save. Click here to make a gift donation online.

  • Honor a loved one (even your pet!) with a gift to KHS in their name for their birthday or another special occasion. Click here to make an honor-memorial gift.

  • Become a volunteer and make a hands-on difference! Wanting to lose weight or quit smoking? We have plenty of volunteer opportunities that not only help KHS care for more needy animals, but also help you meet your personal goals in 2006! Click here to learn more today.

Operation S.N.I.P.
KHS Launches an Aggressive Spay-Neuter Initiative

On January 8, KHS launched what's expected to be the most aggressive spay-neuter initiative of its kind in the state-- Operation S.N.I.P (Spay Neuter Incentive Program). In an effort to combat the Louisville area's staggering pet overpopulation crisis, KHS now conducts regular low-cost spay-neuter clinics that are open to the public.

KHS hopes to alter dozens of owned pets every week, with the goal of spaying or neutering 1,000 pets in 2006 and 6,000 pets annually by the year 2008. Click here to learn more.

Call (502) 515-3148 for more information on our regular low-cost spay-neuter clinics!

Pets Looking for Homes
Every single day at KHS, there are over 250 pets who want to find loving homes. Here are just a couple of our adoptable pets...

Mark, an adorable 4-month-old Golden Retriever mix, is looking for a great place to call home! Won’t you be his new best friend? He's such a friendly pup, who wouldn't want to take him home! Mark can't wait to find a loving, active household where he'll get plenty of exercise and attention. This lovable pup can be a little shy at first, but he warms up real fast and would make a wonderful addition to an already pet-friendly home or as an only pet. Neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on all vaccinations, Mark wants to join YOUR family! Come visit him today at the Kentucky Humane Society's Dixie Feeders Supply adoption site in Valley Station! Or, call (502) 366-3355 for more information.

Tigger, a beautiful 2-year-old brown tabby, is ready to be your new best friend! Won't you give her a good home? This easygoing kitty is incredibly sweet and will just adore you. She's looking for a loving family who will shower her with lots of love and attention. Spayed, microchipped and up-to-date on all vaccinations, Tigger just wants to find a good home today! Tigger would make a wonderful pet and lifelong friend, so come visit her at the Kentucky Humane Society's Fern Creek Feeders Supply adoption site! Or, call (502) 366-3355 for more information.

Touching Lives
One of the many stories from adopters who found a great companion at KHS...

Finding Beans
Ready to adopt a family pet, the Bouvier family contacted KHS in October 2004, in search of an adult dog who was already housebroken and good with children. Learning about "Brownie," a 5-year-old Jack Russell Terrier mix, Anthony and Carla Bouvier immediately drove to the Springhurst KHS-Feeders Supply adoption site, where he was up for adoption. "When we got there, he just stole our hearts, and we adopted him that day," said Carla of Jeffersonville, Ind.

Renaming him "Beans," the Bouvier family was so excited to welcome the adorable Jack Russell into their home and their lives. While out walking in their neighborhood a week later, a woman saw Beans with the Bouviers and said, "Hi, Brownie!" Inquiring about how the lady knew the sweet canine, Carla and Anthony learned that Beans had previously lived with a man across the street.

After talking to this man and taking Beans to his house, the couple discovered that it was his Brownie! In shock, the previous owner shared his story of surrendering Brownie to KHS the previous week since his children had severe allergies. The Bouvier family believes that "he is back in the same neighborhood for a reason."

The Bouviers adore Beans and cannot imagine life without him. "It's been over a year since we got him, and he's still as sweet as he was on that first day!" shared Carla.

Congratulations to Beans and the Bouvier family! KHS wishes you all the best!

To the Rescue! Stories & Updates
Every month, KHS helps hundreds of animals in need. Here are just a couple of our rescue stories...

"Beth," "Diana" and "Patton," three 4-month-old Terrier/Labrador Retriever mixes, came to KHS with collars embedded on their necks. The KHS veterinary team removed the collars, believed to have been worn on the dogs' necks for quite some time, and treated their wounds for infection. The three pups quickly recovered from their injuries and now are looking for permanent homes where they'll get plenty of attention!

“Juliet”, a stray 3-month-old longhaired tortoiseshell, was abandoned at the KHS main campus on a cold December morning. At first, she was terrified, cowering away from any human contact. But, after being placed in foster care, where she received much needed socialization, Juliet came right out of her shell-- becoming a very loving and playful kitten. Congratulations to Juliet who found her lifelong home in late December!

"Ladybird," a stray 2-year-old Labrador Retriever mix, was discovered roaming a field in Trimble County, Ky., with injuries on both her front legs. Possibly attacked by another animal, Ladybird was missing a toe on her right front leg, as well as a considerable amount of skin near her left front foreleg. The KHS veterinary team examined her wounds and began immediate treatment for infection. Ladybird was placed in foster care, where she fully recuperated. Now all this social butterfly needs is a great place to call home!

"Eddie," a sweet 6-year-old Rat Terrier, came to KHS in late December heatworm positive. Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal illness for infected dogs. Thankfully, Eddie is receiving treatment and soon will be placed in foster care until he's fully recovered and ready for adoption.

-UPDATE-
"Flora," "Harmonia," and "Vincet,"
the three stray Siamese kittens featured in the December KENNEL CHRONICLES, received all the nourishment they needed while in foster care. Placed for adoption in early January, Flora, Harmonia and Vincent all joined loving families!
