Here are just a couple of our adoptable pets...

"Bugsy," a two-year-old shepherd mix, is a FAITHFUL FRIEND! Reliable and relaxed, this low-maintenance dog just wants to be by your side.

Such a sweetheart, Bugsy wants nothing more than to find a loving household where he'll get plenty of attention and exercise. He plays well with children and gets along with other dogs...so he may just be the perfect match for you. Neutered and microchipped, with up-to-date vaccinations, all Bugsy needs is your friendship!

Come meet Bugsy today by visiting the Springhurst KHS-Feeders Supply adoption site! Or, call (502) 366-3355 for more information.

"Oakie," a one-year-old shorthaired tortoiseshell, is a FAITHFUL FURBALL!  Easygoing and friendly, this beautiful girl is a mellow cat with few worries. She's extremely affectionate and the perfect lap cat. Oakie appears to like other cats, but she would do best in a home with older children and no dogs. Touching Lives: Penny

Dear Kentucky Humane Society,

On a chilly, drizzly Saturday in late March, KHS was abuzz with volunteers collecting their buckets and signs for the PENNIES FOR PETS fundraiser. That morning, some volunteers and staff noticed a stray black and tan dog roaming the neighborhood. Try as they might to catch her, the elusive girl managed to get away.

At the end of the day, as the volunteers were returning their PENNIES FOR PETS materials, one of them mentioned noticing a dog asleep in a ditch close by. Seizing the moment, they were able to catch the extremely timid, nervous pup.

Wanting to help this scared dog, I offered to foster her. Now going by "Penny," it wasn't long before she completely charmed everyone in our house and became best friends with "Jilly," our border collie/chow mix.

Penny's personality has really blossomed. She's a big clown, very affectionate, a little clumsy but very smart. She's a recent graduate of the KHS Behavior Program's "Manners For Life" class, where she acquired better socialization and other practical skills. She and Jilly play long games of chase in the back yard, then come inside for lots of treats, belly rubs and long naps.

Now that we've officially adopted her, this lucky Penny is officially a Penny saved!

Sincerely,
Mindy F.
KHS Volunteer

To the Rescue! Stories & Updates
Every month, KHS helps hundreds of animals in need. Here are just a couple of our rescue stories...

"Jitterbug," a two-month-old black and white kitten, was discovered under a house porch in South Louisville with her two brothers. After the pets' owner contacted KHS for help, a rescue officer was dispatched to the scene. The team immediately began rescue efforts to retrieve the scared kittens from under the low-lying porch deck.

Once rescued, the two male kittens appeared scared but healthy, but Jitterbug was in worse condition. Not only extremely terrified, she also had sustained an unfortunate injury -- there was a fishing hook through her tongue, lip and front paw.

Once at the KHS main campus, Jitterbug was examined by a KHS veterinarian to determine the severity of injury. The vet team determined that the hook had been implanted less than 24 hours so, luckily, they were able to remove it immediately. Rescue Director Mike McNutt shared, "The hook kept Jitterbug from being able to walk, eat, basically do anything, so we're glad that we could help her and give her a second chance."

Jitterbug remains on antibiotics to avoid the spread of infection, but she is expected to make a full recovery. KHS cannot wait to find her a loving home where she will be showered with love and attention!

Please do not let your pet roam unsupervised outdoors, as they can become lost or injured like Jitterbug. Keep your furry friends indoors so they can lead longer, healthier lives!

"Foxy," a sweet two-year-old blonde Siberian husky mix, was rescued by KHS in early June with a severely injured leg. Seeking help, a New Castle, Ky. resident contacted KHS after the adult dog's right back leg had become entangled by a cable wire and she no longer could care for her pet.

Arriving at the Henry County property, the KHS rescue officer discovered that the situation was worse than expected. Foxy was not only emaciated, but her injury appeared to have occurred days before. The cable wrapped around the poor dog's thigh was so tight that it cut off circulation to her entire leg.

After being surrendered to KHS, the timid dog was brought to the main campus for medical attention. Upon examination of her injury, a KHS veterinarian quickly determined that amputation was necessary. The surgery was successful, and Foxy was placed in foster care where she continues to gain weight and strength as a three-legged dog. Now, she is a friendly, cheerful dog who loves to give kisses!

Foxy soon will be ready to join a wonderful family. If you would like to learn more about Foxy, call (502) 366-3355 today!

"Maddie," a three-year-old German shorthaired pointer mix, came to KHS as a stray in late April. Upon initial examination and testing, the KHS veterinary team discovered that she was heartworm positive. Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal illness for infected dogs. Thankfully, Maddie is receiving treatment and soon will be placed in foster care until she's fully recovered and ready for adoption.

Interested in fostering in Maddie? Call (502) 515-3138 today! Click here to learn more about KHS' life-saving foster care program.
