To the Rescue! Stories & Updates
Every month, KHS helps hundreds of animals in need. Here are just a couple of our rescue stories...

In late August, a Henry County resident accidentally struck his young dog with a vehicle. "Zoey," an eight-month-old Labrador retriever mix, had sustained a major injury to her front left limb, causing exposed bone fragments. Unable to afford veterinary care, the distraught owner contacted the KHS rescue team for help.

Responding to the scene, a KHS rescue officer discovered that the canine's injury resulted in immobility on her front left leg and had occurred approximately one week before. Once the owner surrendered ownership, the rescue officer immediately transported the wounded dog to the KHS main campus for medical attention.

Upon arrival, a KHS veterinarian examined Zoey's injury and concluded that she suffered from a compound fracture of the radial and ulnar joint (forearm near elbow) of her left front limb. With an open fracture where the bone is displaced and piercing through the skin, there always is a significant risk of infection. Thus, the KHS veterinary team deemed it necessary to perform amputation on September 1 in order to save her life.

After surgery, Zoey was placed in foster care for recovery. She continues to receive antibiotics, but this happy-go-lucky girl has adjusted to life as a three-legged dog. Zoey soon will be looking to join a loving family!

If you are interested in adopting Zoey, call (502) 366-3355 today!

"Simon," an adult Siamese, was wandering a street in South Louisville when rescued by a KHS rescue officer. The cat appeared to be injured, with visible gashes on his left shoulder.

Brought to the KHS main campus, Simon underwent an initial health examination. While the KHS veterinary team determined that his wounds were not life-threatening or severe, it soon was discovered that Simon suffered from feline leukemia virus (FeLV), a very serious disease that causes a weakened immune system.

The viral infection is one of the most common causes of deaths in cats, since it triggers vulnerability of secondary infections, as well as common felines cancers. Cats typically contract the virus through contact with other infected felines, either in a multi-cat household or while roaming outdoors unsupervised.

Although Simon's feline leukemia cannot be cured, KHS was able to locate a facility that cares for infected cats throughout their lifetime. Simon now resides at the Fe-Leuk Clinic in Louisville, Ky., where he will lead a happy, comfortable life!

Touching Lives
One of the many stories from adopters who found a great companion at KHS...

-Update from the Spring-Summer PAW STREET JOURNAL-
"Rusty," a stray two-year-old hound mix, was wandering a busy road in Okolona, Ky. when struck by a vehicle. Thankfully, Louisville resident Patricia W. rescued the injured dog and immediately took him to Jefferson Animal Hospital for medical attention, where they discovered that Rusty's hip was dislocated.

Wanting to save Rusty's life, Patricia paid for his hip replacement surgery and antibiotics. Then, on January 22, Patricia brought the fearful dog to the KHS main campus so he could continue treatment and eventually find a permanent home. After performing a final hip surgery and resuming a strong antibiotic treatment, KHS staff placed Rusty in foster care.

After months of foster care, Rusty made a full recovery and slowly began trusting people again. Yet, the timid dog still continued to exhibit signs of anxiety, so he remained in foster care for socialization.

Then, in early April, Sarah B. visited the KHS main campus looking to adopt a canine companion and learned about Rusty, a "Lonely Hearts Club" member who had endured so much. Meeting Rusty that day, the Lyndon resident quickly fell in love with the adult dog.

Adopting Rusty on April 20, Sarah decided to take a vacation -- to stay at home with Rusty and ensure he comfortably transitioned to life in his new home. Since being adopted, Rusty has made even more strides. "Rusty is still skittish and nervous at times," said Sarah, a nurse at Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital. "But he's feeling better, he's healthy...he's come so far, it's tremendous."

Their daily routine includes an early morning walk, Nylabones and plenty of bonding. Sarah and Rusty also often visit Sarah's mother, who Rusty just adores. "We're very happy," shared Sarah, who has lost 15 pounds from her daily walks with Rusty. "I just love him to death."

Congratulations to Rusty and Sarah! KHS wishes them all the best!
