KHS Opening State's First Clinic of Its Kind
An End to Euthanasia May Be In Sight

KHS is taking its Operation S.N.I.P. to the next level in an aggressive attempt to combat the area's massive pet overpopulation problem. The new KHS "S.N.I.P. Clinic," located at 2445 Crittenden Drive, is set to open on February 5, 2007.

The clinic will be home to an innovative program unlike anything that currently exists in the region. Previously offered one day a week, the low-cost spay/neuter clinic is expanding to five days a week at a separate facility dedicated entirely to providing affordable spay/neuter surgeries to low-income individuals. Furthermore, the S.N.I.P. Clinic will provide free pet transport to and from surrounding counties within a 75-mile radius of Louisville, as well as free urban transport to seven targeted zip codes.

The goal is to alter 6,000 owned pets annually at the S.N.I.P. Clinic. This, coupled with approximately 5,000 homeless pets who are altered prior to adoption each year, means KHS expects to spay or neuter a total of 11,000 pets in 2007 alone. Click here to read more.

For more information on the S.N.I.P. Clinic and its services, click here. Beginning January 15, please call (502) 636-FIX1 to schedule an appointment.

Pets Looking for Homes
Help KHS find homes for thousands of unwanted dogs and cats!
Here are just a couple of pets looking for homes...

"Indy," a two-year-old husky/collie mix, can't wait to be your new sidekick! Friendly and playful, this handsome boy is an energetic canine who can keep up with your active lifestyle. Indy appears to be housebroken and gets along with other dogs, but he would do best with children six years and older.

Neutered and microchipped, with up-to-date vaccinations, this lively boy just may be your perfect match! Come meet Indy today by visiting the Kentucky Humane Society's main campus! Or, call (502) 366-3355 for more information.

"Tom," a three-year-old shorthaired orange tabby, wants to find his forever home! Regal and relaxed, this handsome boy is a mellow cat with few worries. Not only is he very affectionate, Tom is also good with children and appears to like other cats. Neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on all vaccinations, this "Lonely Hearts Club" member can offer a lifetime of companionship if given a chance!

Come visit this lovable kitty today at the Kentucky Humane Society's Clarksville Feeders Supply adoption site!

To the Rescue! Stories & Updates
Every month, KHS helps hundreds of animals in need. Here are just a couple of our rescue stories...

In mid-December, a four-month-old shar-pei mix was rescued by a KHS Rescue Officer in Spencer County. "Baby" was discovered wandering a rural road in Taylorsville, with an injured right hind leg. The stray puppy immediately was transported to the KHS main campus for medical attention.

Upon examination, a KHS veterinarian concluded that Baby may have been struck by a vehicle or attacked by another animal. She not only suffered from lacerations on her hind legs, but also had a dislocated hip. Yet, it soon was discovered that Baby suffered from more than bodily injuries -- she also tested positive for canine parvovirus, also known simply as "parvo."

Parvo is a highly contagious, potentially fatal disease that attacks the digestive tract and lymph nodes in puppies and unvaccinated dogs. Symptoms include severe vomiting, bloody diarrhea and lethargy. Without intense treatment, infected dogs can die from dehydration and lack of nutrition.

Fortunately, the KHS veterinary team diagnosed this dangerous disease in its early stage, so they promptly placed Baby in foster care, beginning an aggressive, regimented treatment that included fluids and antibiotics.

Luckily, Baby recuperated from the viral infection, but the young dog still remains in foster care since she recently developed tracheobronchitis, also know as "kennel cough." Once she recovers from that respiratory illness, the veterinary team will determine if hip replacement surgery will be performed in order to save her fractured leg.

From overcoming parvo to suffering from a leg injury, Baby has endured a lot. KHS wishes her a speedy recovery, so she can lead a happy, healthy life!

"Storm," a three-month-old shorthaired tortoiseshell, was discovered as a stray in Jeffersontown, Ky. in late November. Brought to the KHS main campus, the young kitten was spayed, microchipped and updated on all of her vaccinations. Five days later, Storm was placed up for adoption at the Dixie KHS-Feeders Supply adoption site, ready to find her permanent home. But, shortly thereafter, Storm fell inside her cat condo, injuring her left hind leg.

Storm’s leg was X-rayed, and, upon review, a KHS veterinarian concluded that her femur, the thighbone that connects the hip to knee, had broken near the hip socket. Surgery has been scheduled later this month, where a KHS veterinarian plans to use pins to correct the severe fracture. Following surgery, the sweet kitten will be placed in foster care since weeks of cage rest will be needed to ensure a full recovery.

Touching Lives: Hops
One of many stories from adopters who found a great companion at KHS...

Dear KHS,

In January 2005, we adopted a sweet little mixed puppy from you, named “Bully.” What we originally thought was just shyness turned out to be illness. After a quick trip to the vet and a few medications, “Hops,” as we have named him, quickly became the sweet and affectionate dog we have come to love as a member of our family.

He is very affectionate, especially with our three-year-old son, and aims to please every day. He is extremely obedient and very playful. He loves to cuddle on the couch and watch a movie. And, the day wouldn’t be complete without feeling that nose on your feet as he nudges himself under the blankets to fall asleep at night.

I am so happy that we found this sweet dog at KHS and were able to give him a great (and might I add, spoiled) life!

Sincerely,
Kimberly E.
