The S.N.I.P. Clinic Meets 6,000 Surgery Goal & Celebrates First-Year Anniversary!

The statistics are staggering -- for every human born, six kittens and puppies are born. The S.N.I.P. Clinic is striving to reduce that number and address the major pet overpopulation crisis in our region.

On January 25, the low-cost, public spay/neuter clinic completed its 6,000th surgery during its first year of operation. That, coupled with over 5,400 adoptable pets who were altered in 2007, means KHS spayed and neutered more than 11,000 pets last year alone.

KHS and the S.N.I.P. Clinic will continue its aggressive spay/neuter initiative by increasing its number of surgeries by 33%, with the goal of altering 8,000 owned pets in 2008. Click here to read more on the S.N.I.P. Clinic's first-year anniversary.

Pets Looking for Homes
Help KHS find homes for thousands of needy dogs and cats! Here are just a couple of our adoptable pets...

"Chase," a four-year-old Border collie mix, is a clever, energetic canine! He's always on the go, loving to play with his favorite ball, take walks and give kisses. Chase appears to be housebroken and already knows basic commands, but he would do best with children six years and older.

Neutered and microchipped, with up-to-date vaccinations, this handsome boy wants to be your Valentine! Come meet Chase today by visiting the Fern Creek KHS-Feeders Supply adoption site! Or, call (502) 366-3355 for more information.

"Nicky," an eleven-year-old shorthaired calico, can offer years of companionship if given a chance! Regal and relaxed, this beautiful girl is a mellow cat with few worries. She would prefer to be the only pet who rules your house.

Spayed and microchipped with up-to-date vaccinations, Nicky wants to find her forever home this Valentine's Day. Come meet her today at the Preston KHS-Feeders Supply adoption site in Okolona! Or, call (502) 366-3355 for more information.

To the Rescue! Stories & Updates
Every month, KHS helps hundreds of animals in need. Here's just one of our rescue stories...

“Steedly,” a one-year-old black shorthaired cat, was brought to KHS in late January after being attacked by another animal while roaming a neighborhood. The young cat had deep bite marks on his right hind legs, as well as on his right side. Both wounds were promptly treated and stitched together by a KHS veterinarian.

Steedly received antibiotics to avoid the spread of infection and was placed in foster care, where his wounds are healing well. He is already purring contently and playing with toys as he recovers.

Steedly should be available for adoption in the next few weeks. KHS wishes him a speedy recovery!

Steedly’s story showcases the importance of keeping your beloved pets indoors and supervising them while outdoors. Pets allowed to roam outside are more likely to be struck by vehicles and attacked by other animals. Ensure your pets' safety by keeping them inside!

--Update from January KENNEL CHRONICLES--
Last month, KHS shared a story about "Merlin," a stray one-year-old Siamese mix who suffered from injuries on both of his front legs. He had a laceration on his right front limb, as well as an abscess on his left front leg, which had to be drained.

Merlin was placed in foster care for a few weeks, then put up for adoption once his wounds healed. The sweet cat, who gets along with all two-legged and four-legged friends, was adopted by the Wiseman family in late January.

Now named "Timon," the young cat is very happy and settled into his new home. "We absolutely love him," said Kimberly Wiseman.

Congratulations to Timon and his new family!

Touching Lives: Bear

Bear came to KHS underweight and homeless. But thankfully, this sweet dog found a family who's given him more than just a warm place to call home -- he happily gets to work on an alpaca farm.

Ask the Experts: Winter Housetraining

Question:
We just adopted a new puppy, but with the cold weather and snow, what's the best way to handle potty training?
- The Lyle family

Answer from the KHS Behavior Training department:
First, the most important thing to do is establish and maintain a regular feeding schedule. Dogs need to relieve themselves shortly after eating, waking from sleep and playing.

Click here to learn what else you can do to keep pets safe this winter and still housetrain your dog.
