Touching Lives: Bobbie
Dear Kentucky Humane Society,
Thank you for bringing Bobbie into my life. She is an amazing cat! The minute I saw Bobbie, I immediately fell in love and knew I had to have her.
I’ve had Bobbie for about a year now, and I could not be happier. She’s definitely quite the lap cat, and when I come home, she’s waiting for me at the door.
I may even adopt another cat from KHS in the near future!
Thanks again,
Caitlin N.

Ask the Experts: Getting Rid of Fleas
Question:
Our dog always gets covered in fleas during the summer. What can we do about this? - Teller family from Louisville, Ky.
Answer from a KHS veterinarian:
Summertime brings out the fleas. They can lay up to 40 eggs per day, cause allergic reactions, survive on their pet for up to 140 days and even transmit bacterial diseases. So, how do you get rid of those pesky fleas? Well, you’ll need to treat your pet, as well as the pet’s environment -- your home – at the same time. Begin treatment immediately and continue year-around to avoid re-infestation
First, consult your veterinarian about treating your dog or cat. The most effective flea control treatments require a veterinary prescription. Plus, your vet will help you determine which treatment is best for your pet and let you know when and how to use the flea control application properly.
Once you begin treating your pet, don’t forget to begin treating the inside of your home. Fleas reproduce at a very rapid rate, so it’s really important to kill them in each stage of the life cycle. Vacuum regularly and dispose of the bags promptly. Wash all pet bedding in hot water and dry at a high heat for at least 20 minutes. Before treating your backyard and other outdoor areas, research the safety precautions on environmental products, as they can be toxic for pets and humans.
Hope you enjoy a flea-free summer! Click here for more tips.
