Pets Looking for Homes
Help KHS find homes for thousands of needy dogs and cats! Here are just a couple of our adoptable pets...

"Butter," a seven-year-old chow chow mix, enjoys the simple life! This gorgeous girl is an easygoing, reliable canine who just needs your friendship. She loves a good belly rub and walks well on a leash. Butter appears to get along with other dogs, but would do best in a home with older children

Spayed and microchipped, with up-to-date vaccinations, this sweetheart can offer a lifetime of companionship if given a chance! Come visit Butter today at the Kentucky Humane Society's main campus! Or, call (502) 366-3355 for more information.

"Bud," a two-month-old tuxedo kitten, is looking for his forever home! He's quite inquisitive and playful, loving to run around and bat his toys. But, he also likes to be showered with love and attention.

Bud is already neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on all vaccinations. Come visit this lovable kitty today at the St. Matthews KHS-Feeders Supply adoption site! Or, call (502) 366-3355 for more information.

To the Rescue! Stories & Updates
Every month, KHS helps hundreds of animals in need. Here's just one of our rescue stories...

--Updates from Spring PAW STREET JOURNAL--

In early March, on a cold day, a two-year-old tabby was found as a stray in Eminence, Ky. "Buck" was vomiting worms and appeared to have an old injury on his right hind leg. A KHS veterinarian examined Buck and determined that he had intestinal worms and possibly sustained a gunshot wound in the past. With the help of KHS, Buck was treated for the worms, then placed up for adoption. Now, the happy feline lives with a loving family and gets to play all he wants. Click here to find out how Buck is doing in his new home!

On a cold winter day, "Penelope" was thrown from a moving vehicle on a busy street in Louisville, Ky. The two-month-old white boxer hit the pavement, skidded and sustained an injury on her head. Thankfully, a Good Samaritan, who witnessed the incident, contacted a KHS rescue officer for help. Once at KHS, the veterinary team discovered that Penelope suffered from more than a head injury -- she was malnourished and had demodectic mange. Thankfully, after months of foster care, Penelope was able to recover and find a permanent, loving home. Click here to read Penelope's story!

Look for more rescue stories and updates in the next KENNEL CHRONICLES and our quarterly newsletter, the PAW STREET JOURNAL!

Ask the Experts: Excited Canine Greetings

Question:
I have a one-year-old pointer mix who I adopted from KHS when she was eight weeks old. She gets really excited whenever anyone arrives home, which is a good thing, but she gets "emotional." She yelps, whines, licks and sometimes urinates. Is this normal, healthy dog behavior?   - Misty F.

Answer from a KHS Behavior Manager:
It is a normal behavior for canines to get excited when you come home, but you can also do some things to help keep it under control. First of all, don't make a big fuss when you come home - the more excited you are, the more excited your dog will be. Keep exits and entries low-key. You may even want to consider taking her straight outside when someone comes in the house, so she can burn off some of the excited energy and also eliminate while she's out there.

One great option is to give your dog something else to do instead of going bonkers when you come in the door. Sit, stay and even tricks will work, as long as she knows them well. Keep some treats in your car or near the door, and as soon as you come in, grab the treats and put her through her paces. She'll be much happier with something constructive to do, and if she's performing the requested behaviors, she can't also be jumping, groveling and whining. Everyone wins!

The excited urination is very common in young dogs, and many outgrow that behavior; however, I would also recommend a vet check to rule out a bladder infection or another medical issue. If it is truly behavioral, the best thing to do is ignore it - coddling will reinforce the behavior, and punishment will only make her do it more in an effort to appease you.
