KHS Generates Buzz with its New Behavior Training Ad Campaign
KHS wants to take the bite out of your dog, literally…and also stop him from chewing everything, eating anything and leaving “presents” in the house. In 2008, KHS is taking a humorous approach to address such common and often challenging issues for dog owners with its new advertising campaign.
Last year, KHS generated buzz with its racy advertising campaign for the S.N.I.P. Clinic, the area’s first full-time, public spay/neuter clinic. Now, one year later, KHS is at it again – but this time to increase awareness about its comprehensive behavior training program.
The campaign not only pokes fun at canine behavior “problems,” but also encourages pet owners to address them through positive reinforcement training. That’s because behavior problems are one of the primary reasons pets are surrendered to animal shelters.

Pets Looking for Homes
Help KHS find homes for thousands of needy dogs and cats! Here are just a couple of our adoptable pets...

"Lucy," a four-year-old shorthaired tabby, is such a sweetheart! She's a mellow cat with few worries, who just adores attention. Spayed and microchipped with up-to-date vaccinations, Lucy may be your perfect match! Come meet her today at the Dixie KHS-Feeders Supply adoption site in Valley Station! Or, call (502) 366-3355 for more information.
"Davis," a four-year-old blue heeler/hound mix, wants to go home with YOU! This handsome guy loves to take walks and play, but also curl up next to you and get plenty of attention. Davis already knows basic commands such as sit and coming when called, but he doesn't like to be left alone, so he needs to go home with a special family that's willing to work on his separation anxiety.
Neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, this Lonely Hearts Club member can offer a lifetime of companionship if given a chance! Come visit him today at the KHS main campus! Or, call (502) 366-3355 for more information.

To the Rescue! Stories & Updates
Every month, KHS helps hundreds of animals in need. Here's just one of our rescue stories...
--Updates from Winter PAW STREET JOURNAL--
"Steel," a stray one-year-old Australian shepherd mix, got his name after sustaining a serious injury in Trimble County. The young, malnourished dog wandered on to a local resident's property with a steel trap attached to his right hind limb. The injury was severe, but with the help of KHS, Steel's leg was able to be saved and he made a full recovery. Now, Steel lives with a loving family and gets to "romp and roll" with his canine siblings. Click here to find out how Steel is doing in his new home!
On a cold December night, “Arina" continuously meowed in pain as she wandered the streets in Germantown -- injured and without a home. Thankfully, a KHS volunteer discovered the stray one-year-old cat and brought her to KHS for help. The KHS veterinary team determined that her left front limb was so badly broken that amputation was unavoidable. Now, the young feline is happy, healthy, and enjoying life in her forever home with another three-legged cat from KHS. Click here to learn how Arina is doing now!

Ask the Experts: Introducing Dog to New Baby
Question:
My husband and I are expecting our first child in May. We have a two-year-old Dalmatian mix who's our "baby," so I'm a little concerned that she'll be jealous when the baby comes. How can I introduce her to our new baby? - The DeWitt family
Answer from the KHS Behavior Training department:
Having a baby is one of the most exciting times in someone's life! But in the hustle and bustle of getting ready for their newest family member, people may forget to include their dog in the preparation process.
Foremost, you'll want to start desensitizing your dog.
Get her used to the idea of having someone new in the house and sharing her affection. Take your dog for walks with the stroller, play records with baby noises like crying, setup the baby swing and even carry around a doll. All of this will allow your dog to become acquainted with the new "things." Also, go ahead and establish any new "house" rules before the baby arrives. For example, if you deem the nursery as off-limits, then begin teaching your dog that now.
Furthermore, if you haven't already, consider enrolling your dog in positive reinforcement basic obedience training. This will help ensure that your dog is well behaved and has a strong foundation for socialization, such as when your little one begins to crawl.
