Pets Looking for Homes
Help KHS find homes for thousands of needy dogs and cats! Here are just a couple of our adoptable pets...

"Layla," a two-year-old hound mix, is such a sweetheart! This beautiful girl loves to take walks and play, as well as curl up by your side. Layla walks well on a leash and already knows basic commands such as "sit." She gets along with other dogs, but would do best in a home with children six years and older.

Spayed, vaccinated and microchipped, Layla can offer a lifetime of companionship if given a chance! Come visit her today at the KHS main campus! Or, call (502) 366-3355 for more information.

"Chili,"
a three-year-old domestic shorthair, wants to be your faithful feline! Regal and relaxed, this beautiful girl is a mellow cat with few worries. While she enjoys long naps and sunbathing, Chili also likes being by your side, getting plenty of attention and love.

Chili is already spayed, microchipped and up-to-date on all vaccinations. Come visit this lovable kitty today at the Fern Creek KHS-Feeders Supply adoption site ! Or, call (502) 366-3355 for more information.

To the Rescue! Stories & Updates
YOUR support of the WAGGIN' TRAIL 5K helps animals like these!

In mid-February, an 11-month-old German shepherd mix was brought to KHS in Spencer County with a severe injury to her left hind leg. After performing a thorough medical exam and x-rays, the KHS veterinary team determined that "Panama" suffered from a serious, painful break in her limb. The injury was located at the ball and socket joint of Panama’s hip.

Veterinarians performed surgery on Panama’s leg in an attempt to save the injured limb. However, during the operation, the KHS veterinarian discovered that the ball of Panama’s hip was broken and very jagged. Once out of surgery, KHS veterinarians continued to monitor Panama’s condition until it became apparent that she would be much happier and healthier without the injured leg.

After her rear left leg was amputated, Panama was placed in foster care until she fully recovered and adjusted to life as a three-legged dog. Once ready for adoption, she waited patiently to find her forever home… until one day Darlene Settles and her son Brad visited KHS and fell in love! Darlene had wanted a smaller dog while Brad wanted a larger one, so they found a great compromise in Panama.

“We saw her the afternoon of April 26 and Brad decided that night that she was the one for him. He couldn’t wait to get back to the Kentucky Humane Society Sunday morning to get her,” Darlene said.

While Darlene also says that she thinks her son may have picked Panama because her amputation pulled at his heartstrings, having only three legs doesn’t slow her down much at all!

“We are so happy with Panama,” Darlene said. She adds that Panama is adjusting well to her new home where she “is so gentle and just wants to be loved.”

Congratulations to Panama and the Settles family!

Ask the Experts: Nail Trimming

Question:
My dog has black nails that grow very long.  I usually take him to a pro for clipping because they bleed when I do it at home. Can you help or advise me in any way?   - Teresa W.

Answer from the KHS Pet Resorts Director:
We don't recommend clipping your pet's nails at home if it's causing them to bleed. Take your dog (or cat) to a reputable professional groomer -- such as at the KHS Eastpoint Pet Resort or Fern Creek Pet Resort -- for a "show trim," so you can learn to clip them properly at home and prevent any bleeding.

However, it's also important to know that black nails are tough and can be difficult to trim. So, it would be best to have a professional groomer trim your dog's nails for awhile so the process becomes a more positive experience for your dog and retrains him (so he doesn't associate the trimming with pain). We recommend taking him to a groomer at least once a month. Long walks on concrete can also help slow re-growth.
