National Feral Cat Day

Join the Movement for Cats’ Humane Care on National Feral Cat Day October 16—National Feral Cat Day—kicks off Alley Cat Allies’ education campaign about stray and feral cats and recognizes the millions of Americans that protect, feed and care for them nationwide. For 10,000 years, feral cats have lived healthy lives outdoors alongside people, in every landscape from urban cities to rural barnyards. Americans from equally diverse walks of life care for these cats; a national survey found that more than 40% of Americans have fed a stray cat. All kinds of people make up the movement for cats’ humane care, from your friends and neighbors to some famous faces. This year, Portia de Rossi, Angela Kinsey, Paula Poundstone, and other celebrities took part in Alley Cat Allies’ “I’m an Alley Cat Ally” Campaign to show their compassion for stray and feral cats and their support for the individuals caring for the cats. At the heart of National Feral Cat Day and the movement to protect and improve the lives of cats is Trap-Neuter-Return, the humane and effective method of managing feral cat colonies. With Trap-Neuter-Return, cats are humanely trapped, neutered, vaccinated, and returned to their outdoor homes. No new kittens are born and the cats no longer experience the stresses of mating and pregnancy. Trap-Neuter-Return is the accepted and widespread way to manage feral cat colonies for individuals, organizations, universities, and even whole cities—Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Chicago have all made Trap-Neuter-Return official policy. This National Feral Cat Day, help Alley Cat Allies expand the movement further and unite people caring for and about stray and feral cats. “Hundreds of thousands of people have already joined in the movement to help protect cats,” said Becky Robinson, president of Alley Cat Allies. “National Feral Cat Day is our national call-to-action to invite millions more.” Visit www.alleycat.org/NFCD to get involved.
