What the KHS students are saying...

ON GROUP CLASSES:
"My dog Frosty Mugs and I have completed several classes. The classes help us learn discipline while having fun. The best part is our teachers, who have the patience and experience to adapt to all the different dogs' and puppies' skill levels and needs. We're all different, but we all fit in and learn from each other."
- Carol Labashosky, Barking Dog Enterprises

"Shadow and I have taken your “Positively Puppies,” “Manners for Life,” “Tricks for Treats” and “Beginners Agility” classes. She and I have thoroughly enjoyed each class! Our family has recently added a new addition to the family. Cookie will soon be taking some of the above classes, too. Thanks for all the advice!"
- Lisa G.

graduation_dec_2011_013.jpg"We recently adopted Ella, a four-month-old puppy, from the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) and were so excited to bring her home! Ella's first day in her new home was wonderful. She made us laugh at her cute antics and her puppy playfulness was just what we needed. Then, by the third day we all had grown tired of the biting, chewing and the fact she refused to walk on a leash. Reality had hit. We couldn't keep her. The obstinate behavior was not what we had planned on nor wanted.

I made several calls to KHS to figure out how to return this newfound bundle of not so cute energy. The phone calls landed me and my son in the Manners I class. Through the next six weeks Ella learned boundaries within her new home, learned how to walk on a leash and could recognize through positive reinforcement what behaviors would earn her praises. Life became more comfortable for her and us. Because of this class and its leadership we fell back in love with our puppy. We now had a game plan on how to deal appropriately with her normal puppy behavior.

The extra help and counseling we received through this class was so beneficial and pertinent to us keeping Ella. Because of the Manners I class, we have a puppy that brings us  much happiness and joy. In return Ella has a new home and family to love and become loyal to. Thank you KHS for offering this class and all the extra supportive information that was emailed to me, and to the dog trainer Allison Woosley who has made life with Ella a joyous occasion and not another heartache. We look forward to the Manners II class."

ON AGILITY:
"Angel, my flat-coated retriever, was very timid and shy around new people and in new situations. Mastering individual agility obstacles was a great accomplishment to her and gave her a huge amount of confidence that continues today.

My lab, Annie, has boundless energy!  Because of patience, positive training techniques, and sound training advice, Annie has been able to focus her energy. Not only has she found her niche, her overall obedience has improved as well.

The Kentucky Humane Society agility classes are designed in such a way that the bond between the animal and handler are continually strengthened. KHS continually seeks to help each dog/handler team in an individual, specific ways. I live in Shelby County, and though there are closer training facilities, I make the drive to KHS each week because of the purely positive experiences my dogs and I have had."

kayla_and_bella.jpg   A Kentucky Humane Society agility student was recently able to realize one of her dreams. Fourteen-year-old Kayla Kurtz and her Sheltie, Bella, attended the first AKC Jr. Agility Competition in Orlando, Florida.
Kayla and Bella proved they can compete with some of the top dogs and handlers in the country. They had a first place finish in round one and a fifth place overall with combined scores in the 12 inch division. What a tremendous finish and great experience for Kayla and Bella!
Bella is energized by Kayla's positive attitude both on and off the agility field and they make a great team. Kayla started taking agility classes at KHS when she was nine-years-old and began competing a year later. She attributes her agility success to her patient trainer, Terry VanHook and of course, to her wonderful dog -- Bella.

ON PRIVATE TRAINING:
haley_behaviortestimonal.jpg"Haley, our border collie mix, is a very high energy pup. All of the instructors we've worked with (classes and private training) have been so helpful in so many ways. Their affirmative approach to happy and well-behaved pets has helped Haley mature and has helped me remain somewhat sane in the process. I'm grateful to them."
