KHS Offers Humane Education Programs!

The Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) offers many exciting educational opportunities for children. We’re making Louisville and surrounding areas a better place for our four-legged friends and the people who love them…now and in the future.

In-Classroom Programs

KHS brings humane education to the classroom! B.A.R.K., which stands for “Be Aware, Responsible and Kind,” is an in-classroom curriculum for students in Kentcukiana schools. The B.A.R.K. Program teaches children about responsible pet ownership, kindness and pet safety. We're happy to customize our presentations to meet curriculum goals and core content guidelines.  All presentations are 45 minutes to one hour and cost $25 per class or a collection of our "wish list" items.  A "wish list" drive is a great way to introduce your students to service learning!  All presentations include a visit with a puppy or dog.

The Pet Suitcase (K-3rd) - A fun, interactive learning experience that teaches students about responsible pet care.

Dog Safety (K-3rd) - Students learn how to safely meet and interact with dogs in a variety of situations. Students  will practice their new skills with KHS ambassador dog, Lulu.

A Shelter Tail (3rd-8th) - An engaging Powerpoint presentation that introduces students to the Kentucky Humane Society and how they can help all companion animals. This program is a great way to jump start a service learning project!

We can also taylor a presentation to fit your needs.

Girl Scouts

Through a great partnership with the Girls Scouts of Kentuckiana, KHS offers programs and workshops for young pet lovers! Our Caring for Pets Workshop helps Brownies fulfill requirements for an animal badge, while our Companion Animal Responsibility Workshop allows Junior Girl Scouts to fulfill requirements for a Pet Care badge and receive an exclusive KHS badge. Moreover, we offer service-learning opportunities for Senior Girl Scouts through our volunteer department.

Shelter Tours & More

KHS also offers shelter tours, presentations and behavior demonstrations for children and adults, as well as participates in community events.
