Kentucky Humane Society Expands Services in East Louisville
New location will offer adoptions, humane education, behavior training, and more

The Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) is expanding its services in east Louisville. Located at 1000 Lyndon Lane near the Westport Village shopping center, this convenient location will offer adoptions, behavior training, Doggie Day Care, all-breed grooming and humane education programs.

KHS’ strategy has been to expand mission programs within the community. “This new location will allow KHS to expand the reach of our services and programs. We can save more lives, touch more people and ultimately make our community an even better place for animals and people,” says Lori Kane Redmon, President-CEO.

Behavior training classes will begin in early March, followed by pet adoptions in April. Doggie Day Care and grooming services will also be offered in the spring. In addition to KHS’ Summer Camp program at the main campus in south Louisville, the popular “Animal Adventure Camp” will be held weekly June 14 through July 12 at the new location.

The Kentucky Humane Society, founded in 1884, advocates the humane treatment of companion animals through leadership and proactive solutions to pet overpopulation, including adoptions, education and spay/neuter efforts.

Kelsey Westbrook Receives KHS "Lifelong Friends" Award

On October 17, Joe's Crab Shack hosted “Sunny Day, Shedding Light on Animal Cruelty,” a fundraiser for the Kentucky Humane Society's S.N.I.P. Clinic, Louisville Metro Animal Services and the Shamrock Pet Foundation. The event honored Sunny, the female pit bull terrier who survived being dropped 80 feet from the Clark Memorial Bridge into the Ohio River in late July.

Sunny's new owner, Kelsey Westbrook, is a server at Joe's Crab Shack and saw the dog as it was thrown from the bridge. To recognize Westbrook for her support and efforts regarding the humane treatment of companion animals, KHS presented her with its "Lifelong Friends" award. Thank you, Kelsey, for standing up against animal cruelty!

"Lifelong Friend" Award Presented to Tom Wills!

Long-time animal lover and Kentucky Humane Society supporter Tom Wills recently retired from WAVE 3 after 40 years as one of the station's meteorologist. In 2008, Wills and his wife adopted two Chihuahuas from KHS, Tiger and Lily.

For more than 25 years, Wills also hosted "Pet of the Week" segments for KHS, helping find homes for thousands of needy cats and dogs.In recognition of his efforts, KHS presented Wills with the first-ever "Lifelong Friends" award.

We will be forever grateful for his support and efforts to help homeless animals in the community. Thank you, Tom and WAVE 3!

Weekly Pet Food Bank

Families can pick up free pet food every Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. at the Kentucky Humane Society main campus, located at 241 Steedly Drive in Louisville.

The weekly pet food bank serves families in need on a first-come, first-served basis. Pet owners wishing to participate must bring photo identification and complete a brief application during their first visit, which requests personal contact information, as well as the number and size of pets in the household. KHS will not require proof of income, but we do want to remind people that the pet food bank is designed to help those who are struggling to feed their companion animals during the recession.

We recommend that each family take at least two weeks worth of food at a time. Furthermore, those using this service will be offered financial assistance at the KHS S.N.I.P. Clinic. Since pet overpopulation still persists in our community, we are requiring pets to be spayed or neutered within three months of their first visit.

For more information on the KHS pet food bank and how you can get involved with this program, contact Admissions Leader Anne Engelsher at (502) 515-3136.
