To Celebrate 125 Years, the Kentucky Humane Society Gets a $2.3 Million Facelift

On June 3, the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) will "start digging" on a $2.3 million renovation project at the agency's main campus in South Louisville, Ky. Upon completion, KHS will provide improved health and stress reduction for dogs and cats in their care, as well as increase pet adoptions at the primary shelter.

The Main Campus Improvement Project includes the addition of a new admissions center and veterinary services wing, as well as installation of a new air ventilation system throughout the entire facility. These changes will improve animal health and allow for better treatment of common illnesses such as upper respiratory infections.

The state's largest animal welfare agency also will enhance living spaces for canines and felines. Cage-less accommodations for adoptable felines will reduce stress by allowing cats to socialize with other felines and relax in an open environment. Canines will have additional area for supervised exercise, training and social interaction with potential adopters.

"The Kentucky Humane Society is a temporary stop for pets waiting to find their best friend," said Lori Kane Redmon, KHS President. "Our goal is to increase the number of pets adopted into permanent homes and provide shorter stays for the thousands of dogs and cats we serve each year."

In addition to environmental updates, KHS will also create a warmer, more visitor-friendly atmosphere at the main campus. By improving the facility's interior and exterior visual appearance, KHS anticipates increased adoption rates, as well as growth in education programs that help support the KHS mission, including behavior training and humane education programs for children.
