$2.3 Million Main Campus Improvement Project to enhance environment & pet adoptability

To celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2009, the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) is revealing plans for a $2.3 million main campus improvement project that will help the state’s largest pet adoption agency do an even better job of caring for homeless dogs and cats.  The project includes a 3,000 square foot addition to the primary KHS shelter located at 241 Steedly Drive in south Louisville, as well as enhancements to the existing structure there that will improve animal health and reduce stress, while making better use of current spaces for customers and volunteers.

KHS currently is completing architectural designs and expects to break ground for the construction project in Spring 2009. “These improvements will lead to more adoptions and shorter stays for the animals we help, meaning more room for the seemingly endless stream of homeless dogs and cats needing our services,” said KHS President Lori Redmon.

Because KHS is a private, non-profit organization, the project will be entirely funded by private individuals, foundations and corporations.  Main Campus Improvement Project Fundraising Chairwoman Patti Swope explained, “So far, 80 percent of the project total has been raised. We’re now asking area animal lovers to show their support of this important community organization and the animals they help by making a special contribution to the Kentucky Humane Society’s Main Campus Improvement Project.”

The renovation project includes installation of a new air ventilation system, providing isolation areas in which to more effectively treat respiratory and other common diseases. “Because the majority of animals who come to KHS have not previously been vaccinated,” Redmon clarified, “animal health and disease prevention are of the utmost importance to us at all times.”

Studies show that reducing animal stress in shelters leads to improved health and behavior, making pets more adoptable. So, areas housing adoptable pets have been redesigned to create an environment that is less stress inducing and facilitates more exercise and interaction with other pets who are also looking for homes. The addition of a cat solarium will allow cats to play and socialize with other felines. More efficient layout of the facility will allow staff and volunteers to better utilize existing dog play yards so adult canines can engage in supervised exercise and social interaction on a daily basis.

To create a warmer, more visitor-friendly atmosphere, the facility’s interior and exterior visual appeal will be improved to help increase adoption rates and participation in education programs at this site, including behavior training classes, summer camps for children, Girl Scout workshops and group tours.
