We've been asked to help animals impacted by hurricanes. Here's what we're doing and how you can help.

Kentucky Humane Society in Action: Hurricane Relief on the Way!

Animal shelters affected by Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Hurricane Irma in Florida have asked the Kentucky Humane Society for help. Here are some of the ways we are answering the call - and how you can help.

Flight from Fort Lauderdale

Today, two KHS team members will meet a plane in Columbus, Ohio, that is flying in animals from Broward County Humane Society. Broward is trying to get as many animals as possible out of their shelter before Hurricane Irma hits on Sunday, as they expect many more pets will need their help after the storm hits. We anticipate taking in up to 20 animals from this flight.

Driving to Jacksonville

Also today, two KHS staff members will drive a rescue vehicle to Jacksonville, Fla., to take in up to 50 shelter animals. This will help Jacksonville Animal Care & Protective Services make room for pets who are expected to be displaced after the storm. The team will pick up the animals around 1 a.m. Saturday night and will drive straight through to Louisville. Traffic is expected to be very heavy – your thoughts and prayers are very much appreciated.

Deployment to Houston

On Monday, Sept. 11, four KHS staff members will deploy to Houston to help with animal rescue efforts. The team will help reunite lost pets with their owners and will provide medical care, kennel care and enrichment for animals at the Houston SPCA.

Harvey Horses

KHS has agreed to take in up to seven horses from Houston SPCA, to help them make room for incoming horses impacted by Hurricane Harvey. We expect that they will arrive by end of next week. They will go to the KHS Rescue Barn for assessment before being placed for adoption.

Harvey Dogs & Cats

KHS is working with a number of national animal organizations and Texas shelters that are responding to the effects of Harvey. We have offered to take in shelter dogs and cats from Texas if their owners cannot reclaim them. We are waiting to hear when our help is needed.
