4-pound Danny Recovering at KHS after Rescue from Abandoned Horse Trailer

Some animals have terribly difficult lives before they arrive at our doors. Danny is one of them. Read about his dramatic rescue and how you can help....

Four-pound Danny came to the Kentucky Humane Society on Nov. 18, after he was found locked in an abandoned horse trailer with 13 other animals, their cages sealed shut and covered in filth. Danny and his friends had been left without food or water, and all animals showed signs of chronic neglect and abuse. Danny was underweight, his teeth were black from decay, and he had a tumor on his eye.

According to NewsChannel 5 in Nashville, eight small dogs, one large dog, and five cats were found in makeshift pens and reportedly filthy stacked cages. Officials with the Animal Rescue Corps, a national animal protection nonprofit, helped the Monteagle Police Department rescue the cats and dogs.

Officials said the trailer was filled with “urine and feces soaked cardboard and soiled cat litter.” There was also a smell of ammonia gas from the animal waste. View video and footage of the rescue.

The trailer was first noticed on Oct. 9, and those with the restaurant said they believe it was parked and left there sometime on Sunday night.

“It’s obvious from the way the trailer is set up that this is the only home they have had for some time,” said ARC Director of Investigations, Amy Haverstick. “There were no doors or openings on these cages and we had to use bolt-cutters to get them free.”

Danny is estimated to be eight years old. At KHS, Danny is receiving the medical attention he needs. Despite the hardships Danny endured, he is a happy, grateful spirit who wants nothing but love!
