The event gives horse owners the option to surrender their horse at no cost and no questions asked. According to Horse Plus Humane Society, no horse will be refused, no matter its condition, age, training level or preexisting medical conditions.

All surrendered horses will be evaluated for quality of life by licensed veterinarians. Adoptable horses will be placed with approved 501(c)3 placement partners: the Kentucky Humane Society, Kentucky Equine Humane Center, Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue and Horse Plus Humane Society. The event is supported by WaterShed Animal Fund and The Right Horse

The One Day Open Door Shelter for Horses has three specific goals, each of which furthers Horse Plus Humane Society’s mission of reducing suffering of horses and other members of the equine family:

  1. Providing a humane option for owners who can no longer keep their horses.
  2. Help adoptable horses find their right home.
  3. Prevent needless suffering of horses that need end-of-life services.

TRH Horiz 4C 600px“Horse Plus Humane Society, based in Hohenwald, Tenn., is committed to humane and ethical prevention of abuse and suffering of horses. Since 2016 Horse Plus has offered One Day Open Door Shelters throughout the United States to give horse owners the option to surrender their horse at no cost. All surrendered horses will be evaluated for quality of life and suitability of finding a new home. Adoptable horses are placed into adoption programs with approved adoption partners throughout the country. To date, 489 horses have been helped through this program. If a horse requires humane end-of-life services to relieve suffering, it is humanely euthanized by a licensed veterinarian in accordance with the American Veterinarian Association and American Association of Equine Practitioners guidelines.  -Tawnee Preisner, President of Horse Plus Humane Society
