Starting July 1, 2018, the state of Kentucky began requiring a 6% sales tax on a variety of services, including companion animal services.
The state is now requiring a 6% tax collection on:
- dog adoption fees and cat adoption fees
- all dog and cat veterinary services, including our Healthy Pets Clinic and S.N.I.P. Clinic
- grooming, boarding and doggie daycare, including at our Eastpoint Pet Resort and Fern Creek Pet Resort
- behavior training classes
The Kentucky Humane Society just learned of the need to tax pet adoptions, and began implementing this on July 9, 2018.
We understand this 6% tax is an additional burden to our clients. The Kentucky Humane Society is a nonprofit dedicated to creating compassionate communities, so we keep prices as reasonable as we can. Thank you for understanding!
In addition to impacting pet services, the new tax law also impacts a portion of charitable donations. The state is now requiring nonprofits, including KHS, to collect and remit 6% sales tax on event tickets and silent and live auction items.
