Reflections on KHS Camp

29 July 2014

As another KHS summer camp season comes to a close, I can’t help but reflect on how lucky I am to be able to witness positive changes in our campers as a result of their time with us. There are so many wonderful stories that I could share but here are a few of my favorites.

Lucia, who first came to camp at 10 years old and eventually became a dedicated volunteer and then….a camp counselor! Her very first paycheck was from KHS. I’ll never forget handing her the check, tied to a balloon and seeing her face beam with pride. We had come full circle. She now works in the veterinary field, continuing to save the lives of animals and we still keep in touch.

Daniel, who came to camp as your typical wild-spirited young boy and grew into a kind-hearted and gentle animal advocate. Daniel has fostered dozens of kittens since that first week of camp and has even been featured in a book on young cat champions. This year, Daniel was a guest speaker at our teen camp, teaching his peers about his foster experience. He is only 12 years old but a wise soul in a young body.

The Mohammeds and Littlejohns attended camp and used what they learned to raise money for our homeless animals! After camp, they went home and made dog toys and treats and sold them at a stand they created in their neighborhood. They raised a significant amount of money for KHS. Their generous efforts still tug at my heart.

choked-dogFinally, there is Tatum. She attended summer camp and used what she learned during our Pet First Aid presentation to help save her dog from choking. She sent a sweet thank you letter to her camp counselor. That adorable letter made my day!

KHS summer camp is not your typical camp. There is no swimming, no horseback riding, no soccer or tennis. Our goal is simple - to plant the seeds of compassion towards animals and teach responsible pet choice and care….all while having fun! We want our campers to become a voice for those that have none and to spread the message of respect towards all creatures. Getting lots of kitten cuddles and puppy kisses is just the icing on the cake!
