Sky has lived most of her life as a free roaming horse, though she was once owned and was turned out on purpose by her owner at the time (not an uncommon practice in some Appalachian areas). Occasionally her babies were taken and sold while she remained out on the reclaimed mine site being bred year after year. She was collected in December of 2023 by KHS when her group was living too close to a main road
Sky gets to know certain employees and seems to remember and trust them if they've been kind to her, but if turned out and not caught for weeks or if approached by a stranger she may "pretend" to be a bit feral again. If she's caught regularly she is much better about it and really does have a kind heart. She stands well for the farrier, to be brushed, leads well, loads, stands tied, and isn't a spooky girl. It seems as though she likely has some experience under saddle but it may have been years and years ago, so we'll forgive her for being a bit rusty as we bring her back into work. Please check back as we gather more info about her experience under saddle and her suitability for different experience level adopters. If you'd like an adoption application (must be approved in order to schedule an adoption appointment) or to see our other adoptable horses you can find them on our website, just let us know if you have any questions! https://www.kyhumane.org/adopt/adoptable-horses
