Hope is an approximately 15yr old mare around 14.1hh with an incredible story. She was a free roaming horse in the mountains and was one of few survivors when a large herd of horses was gunned down in Kentucky in 2019. The story of her herd spread far and wide and KHS quickly agreed to take the survivors as soon as they could be secured. Hope arrived at KHS with a foal at her side, a filly named Diamond that was certainly an adult past foal of hers, and she was in foal at the time. She was thin and seemed feral upon arrival. With time Hope has gained weight, learned to trust humans again, delivered a foal in the spring of 2020, and now she is physically ready to find a home of her own. After evaluation it seems that Hope was likely ridden and owned in the past before becoming a free roaming horse. She is able to be tacked up, ground worked, and has been ridden in a roundpen. She doesn't seem prone to buck or bolt at all, but doesn't quite seem to know what a rider would expect from a horse so she is likely very green as well as rusty. She could use a refresher in training and is not a ready set trail horse at this time, though we have no doubt she will make an amazing trail horse in time. Hope is a mixed breed mare. She likely is at least part Kentucky Mountain Saddle horse type, and has a forward deep stepping walk, but that this time she trots for groundwork and under saddle and has not been seen to gait. Hope can be very friendly and personable in the pasture, however she can also be a bit difficult to handle for care procedures like farrier appointments. Her ideal adopter will be someone compassionate and understanding of her history, but also someone capable of furthering her education and fostering positive behaviors. Hope certainly has a special story, but is a strong and resilient mare. She would thrive with an owner who is just as smart and resilient as she is.
