The Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) had its largest adoption year on record, with 6,902 animals finding homes in 2019 – 816 more pets than the year before.
And the biggest winners were cats.
“We are calling 2019 ‘the year of the cat,’” said Andrea Blair, KHS spokesperson. “For the first time in our history, cat adoptions were higher than dog adoptions.”
BISSELL Pet Foundation (BPF) is aiming to bring holiday hope to homeless pets with its national Empty the Shelters – Holiday Hope event. On Dec. 13-14, 2019, BPF will support over 110 shelters by offering reduced-fee pet adoptions – including the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) and Metro Animal Services (MAS).
During these days, KHS is reducing adoption fees on dogs to $25 and will be charging no adoption fees on cats. MAS is waiving all adoption fees both days for all cats and dogs, thanks to BPF and the non-profit, Friends of Metro Animal Services.

After placing over 23,000 pets in homes since 2016, BISSELL Pet Foundation (BPF) is back to Empty the Shelters at participating animal shelters across the country, including the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS). On Saturday, October 12, KHS is reducing adoption fees on dogs to just $25 and will be charging no adoption fees on cats. BPF sponsors the remaining adoption fees.
Ready for a new “fur-ever friend”? This Saturday the Kentucky Humane Society is offering $5 adoption fees for adult cats and $40 for select adult dogs during the national Clear the Shelters adoption event August 17.
The Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) invites the public to create a “pet independence day” for grateful shelter pets by adopting this weekend.
During the “Pet Independence Adoption Celebration” July 5-7, 2019, cats 4 months and older can be adopted for $4, and dogs 4 months and older can be adopted for $17.76, in honor of the founding of the country. Jefferson County adopters also pay for pet licensing fees ($10.50) and donations are gratefully accepted.
