How to surrender your petAt the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS), we believe in lifelong commitments to companion animals and work tirelessly to create and maintain such a bond. However, we do understand that there are circumstances that prevent you from being able to keep your animal, and we are here to help you through this difficult time.

Surrendering your pet to a sheltering agency should be considered a last resort. Please consider all available alternatives prior to contacting the KHS Admissions Office. This may include rehoming your animal with a friend, relative or neighbor. You have a number of choices, and surrendering your pet to KHS is just one of them.

Alternatives to Surrendering Your Pet

Admissions are only accepted at our Main Campus, located at 241 Steedly Drive in South Louisville.

Safe Haven Program

The Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) and the Center for Women & Families established the Safe Haven program in 2001 to help care for the pets of domestic violence survivors.Safe Haven for pets from domestic violence

Sadly, many people in an abusive relationships delay leaving their spouses or partners due to fear that they may hurt or injure their animal companions. But, KHS is here to help by offering a "safe haven" for their pets.

While these women seek help and shelter from abusive living situations, KHS provides a safe, anonymous home for their beloved dogs and cats. This program not only provides a safe place for the pets, but also helps puts the family at ease, knowing their furry friends will receive care and love until they can be reunited.

The Center for Women & Families presented their "Partner of Distinction" award to the Kentucky Humane Society's Safe Haven program on February 26, 2009.
