Our hearts go out to all the communities, people and animals impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. We are partnering with BISSELL Pet Foundation to help hurricane-impacted shelters by bringing animals – all of whom were unowned and in a shelter before the storms hit – to the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS). As animal lovers, we know that many of you will want to help.
The Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) is seeking community help in the following areas:
Donations
KHS is in need of additional supplies to care for vulnerable animals coming to us from out of state. You can donate supplies from our Amazon or Chewy Wish Lists or drop off supplies in person at our Sam Swope Pet Treatment and Lifesaving Center. Our number one supply need is towels! Monetary donations are always appreciated. Don’t forget to double your impact by seeing if your company will match your donation!
Foster Caregivers
Would you temporarily open your home and heart to a foster animal? KHS provides all supplies, making this experience no cost to you. You can:
- Foster current KHS animals, which then allows us to make space for our new arrivals
- Foster cats and dogs coming to Kentucky from hurricane-impacted shelters
If your home is a good fit for one of our animals, a member of our foster team will reach out to discuss details.
Volunteers
Are you interested in hands-on care for the animals who are coming to KHS from hurricane-impacted shelters?
- Tasks include:
- Feeding, cleaning and walking dogs
- Feeding, cleaning and socializing cats
- Shifts are available from October 15-22: 8-11 a.m. and 2-5 p.m. at our Retreat (Gene Snyder & Taylorsville Rd)
- Must be 18+
- New volunteers should indicate “Hurricane Relief” when creating their profile
Adopt a Shelter Pet
Adopting an animal currently at KHS allows us to make space for urgent disaster relief and other animal rescue efforts. The Kentucky Humane Society is dedicated to aiding as many animals as possible, but first, we need your help. Without open kennels, we cannot welcome new animals into our care. If you have been waiting for a sign to foster or adopt a dog, puppy, cat or kitten – this is it. You’ll create space in our shelter for more animals who urgently need our help. Together, we can help those most impacted by this severe weather and provide animals with the compassionate care they deserve.
The BISSELL Pet Foundation, a national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending pet homelessness, is partnering with KHS to host an “Empty the Shelters” waived-fee adoption event for adult dogs and cats (1 year+) through October 20.
Support Furry Friends
Furry Friends’s Palm City Ranch was devastated by a tornado caused by Hurricane Milton, leaving them with a total loss. Windows are blown in, buildings are on their side, and their outdoor yards and runs are completely destroyed. They urgently need donations. Learn more and support their efforts by visiting https://furryfriendsadoption.org/donate/.
