Senior dogs have spent years giving their families love, companionship and loyalty. When age brings new health needs — and new expenses — the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) wants to help ensure those dogs can stay where they belong: at home with the people who love them.
Thanks to a generous grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization, KHS will provide critical support to senior dogs whose families are facing financial barriers to their care.
For families struggling with rising costs, even routine expenses can become difficult to manage. For a senior dog, those challenges can be compounded by age-related medical needs. Through KHS’ Pet Retention Services, families can access resources that help them continue caring for their pets rather than facing the heartbreaking possibility of surrendering them because they cannot afford the care they need.
“Senior dogs are cherished members of their families, and we want to help them stay together for as long as possible,” said Shelby Schulz, Pet Retention Services Manager. “With support from The Grey Muzzle Organization, we can help families meet their older dogs’ changing needs and give these wonderful pets the healthy, comfortable lives they deserve.”
The grant is part of KHS’ broader commitment to helping people and pets stay together. Through Pet Retention Services, KHS connects families with pet food, veterinary assistance, behavior support and other resources that can help overcome challenges that might otherwise lead to the surrender of a beloved animal.
A National Investment in Senior Dogs
KHS was selected for funding from among hundreds of animal welfare organizations that applied to The Grey Muzzle Organization’s highly competitive grant program.
Since 2008, Grey Muzzle has provided more than $8.3 million in grants to animal shelters, rescue groups and sanctuaries across the country, creating a national network dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk senior dogs.
“We are thrilled to support programs that deliver immediate care while also establishing scalable best practices to strengthen senior dog initiatives nationwide,” said Emily Grossheider, Executive Director of The Grey Muzzle Organization. “Senior dogs are among the most vulnerable in our communities, yet they have tremendous capacity for love and companionship. Our grants help organizations like Kentucky Humane Society provide the medical support, foster care, and adoption services needed to give these dogs a real second chance.”
For KHS, that second chance often means helping a senior dog avoid entering a shelter in the first place.
By providing families with practical support when they need it most, KHS and Grey Muzzle are working toward a simple but important goal: more senior dogs growing older in good health, surrounded by the families who love them.
