Youth Volunteers

Youth Volunteer Opportunities at the Kentucky Humane Society

Make a meaningful impact on animals—right from home! Our At Home Packet is a fun and flexible way to support our mission, whether you’re looking to earn service hours or just want to help animals.

Here’s how it works:

  • Download the At Home Packet for step-by-step instructions.
  • Complete your projects at home.
  • Drop off your donations at our East Campus location—no appointment needed! A secure donation bin is located outside the doors and is checked multiple times during business hours. You may also drop off after business hours if you’d like.

Important Notes:

  • You do not need to create a Volunteer Hub profile to participate in the At Home Packet program.
  • If you need documentation for service hours, follow the instructions in the packet. Please allow up to 5 business days for documentation to be returned, as our Volunteer Engagement Manager handles a high volume of requests.
  • This packet is designed for students completing 30 hours or fewer of service.

  • Are you in Eagle Scouts or Troops of any kind and are looking for merit badges?

Volunteering in Person

KHS is not accepting youth volunteers for in-shelter volunteering at this time. Our East Campus in-person volunteer shifts will conclude on July 26, 2026. KHS’s East Campus is being sold as part of KHS’s long-term plan to support the new Animal & Community Campus.

Youth volunteers remain an important part of the Kentucky Humane Society community. Because many of the animals at Sam Swope Pet TLC are not yet cleared for adoption due to health or behavioral considerations, volunteers under age 18 are not able to sign up for animal care shifts at this location. However, there continue to be meaningful, age-appropriate ways for youth to stay involved.

While specific dates and formats are still being finalized, youth opportunities are expected to include:
Youth Enrichment Fairs, focused on hands-on enrichment activities and shelter support
Fostering, with a parent or guardian (18+)
At-Home Pet Project Packets & Scouting Projects, allowing youth to support animals while earning school service hours

Additional youth volunteer opportunities are currently being developed, and KHS will share updates as plans are finalized.
