Get Involved: Volunteer!

dawn volunteer of monthHow to Help Our Animals

Want to help our animals? Consider volunteering at our shelter or adoption centers, fostering pets, volunteering at special events, or collecting Wish List items:

At this time, we are not accepting Adult Volunteers at our East Campus Adoption Center. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we focus on growing other programs at our shelter. Please continue reading for other volunteer opportunities outside of our East Campus.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS)!  Our organization depends greatly on the support of our volunteers to ensure the health and happiness of our shelter animals. We have over 500+ volunteers who give 75,000+ hours each year!

We have many different opportunities to volunteer that require different levels of trainings for our unique programs. Volunteers are asked to donate 2 hours of their time every 2 weeks, for a consecutive 6-month period to remain an active volunteer. For Juniors and Students wishing to volunteer, we encourage their involvement of volunteer hours through the At Home Pet Project Packet (PDF). However, for in-shelter opportunities continue reading below for more information.

Please read through our “Frequently Asked Questions” list and our “How to Get Started” information (below) before filling out the volunteer application.

Please note, at times we may have a waitlist for volunteer positions.  We ask for your patience as it may be several months before we are able to schedule you for training. Due to the high volume of volunteer inquiries, please allow us 2 weeks to contact you about your application, phone calls, or emails.

How to Get Started

  1. Read through our Frequently Asked Questions

  2. Read through the “Where Can I Volunteer?” handout (PDF)

  3. Please complete the Online Volunteer Application at Following review and approval, you will be emailed instructions to sign up for an orientation class.

  4. Attend Orientation. All Adult Volunteers must attend orientation at our Sam Swope Pet Treatment and Lifesaving Center on Steedly Drive. Fostering Animals

Each year KHS takes in over 1,500 dogs, cats and horses who need a little time in foster care before they can be adopted. Typically animals who need temporary homes are too young to be adopted, or animals who are recovering from illness, injury or surgery.

You can help KHS "expand its shelter walls" by providing a temporary home to these needy animals. By doing so, you'll help socialize a younger pet, or provide a comfortable, secure place for an older pet to recover. And you'll help KHS save more lives, as the most foster homes we have, the more needy pets we can take in.

Most of our foster caregivers work full time and have other pets at home. Many families enjoy fostering, as the experience teaches children how to care for young or injured pets and how they can personally make a difference in an animal's life.

KHS provides you with 5 hours of service per day. Attending a foster orientation is required. Contact the Foster Coordinator for more information at [email protected].

KHS is also seeking foster families for horses in our Equine C.A.R.E. Program. The Foster Home Program (FHP) requires that fosters own their property or be willing to board foster horses. Prospective fosters need to sign a release form and schedule a site visit with a member of our Equine team. For more information about the FHP Program, please contact [email protected]

Special Events Volunteering

KHS has special events throughout the year that we need help from volunteers. Below is a list of special events and their dates. If you are interested in helping out at any of these please contact the Community Relations Manager for more information.
