How to Adopt

Covid-19 Update: VIRTUAL ADOPTIONS BY APPOINTMENT

While all our adoption centers remain closed, we are excited we are now offering dog and cat adoptions by scheduled appointment. At this time, an adopter cannot meet their animal until after they have completed virtual counseling with an adoption counselor and their application has been approved.

STEP 1 – View Adoptable Pets Online

To be considered for adoption, please check our adoptable dogs and adoptable cats pages to see which animals are currently available for adoption. We will be adding new pets throughout the week, so check back often.

STEP 2 – Fill Out an Adoption Interest Form

After you have identified an animal you are interested in, you must first fill out an online dog adoption interest form or cat adoption interest form and indicate which animal you are inquiring about.

Applications will be processed in the order are received, and we cannot guarantee that the animal you see online does not already have a potential adopter.

STEP 3 – Complete Virtual Counseling

After your application has been reviewed, an adoption counselor will contact you to provide remote counseling over the phone, sharing any medical or behavioral information we have about the animal and answering your questions. We’ll talk about considerations to have when welcoming your newest family member into your home and other species-specific topics.

STEP 4 – Meet and Take Home Your New Animal

After your remote counseling session has been completed and all of your questions have been answered, we will schedule a time and place for you to meet the pet you are interested in. Adoption appointments will be scheduled for one hour. If you choose to adopt the pet, the adoption will be processed at that time, and you will take home your new furry family member. Please respect social distancing during your appointment.

We ask for your patience during this time. We are experiencing staffing disruptions and are working through a new way to adopt grateful dogs and cats while keeping our staff and community safe. Thank you for your understanding! #TeamKentucky #HealthyatHome #TogtherKY
