The Franklin County 13 have been at our Willow Hope Farm for almost a month now, and are making slow, steady strides towards recovery every day. The first month of care is critical, and often times touch-and-go, for neglected horses. We are constantly monitoring for symptoms of refeeding syndrome and supporting them as they reacclimate to proper nutrition. Simply put, our only goal right now is keeping these horses alive and well until they can be fully rehabilitated.
War Envoy was the first member of the Franklin County 13 that we identified and we were shocked to learn that he’s been all over the world, winning hundreds of thousands of dollars for humans. With no one to advocate for him after his racing career ended, War Envoy was passed around and left to fend for himself until he became the malnourished, emaciated horse we know now.

Since arriving at Willow Hope Farm, War Envoy has slowly but surely improved. He has access to a come-and-go stall that’s bedded with shavings and easily accessible hay so that he can eat whenever and wherever he likes – a luxury he hasn’t been afforded in years. Time and time again, this resilient horse has let us know that he is strong enough to overcome the adversity he’s faced. He’s social and regularly “patrols” the pasture, checking on his herd-mates as they continue their personal recoveries.
Odyssia de san Israel, another member of the Franklin County 13, is doing the best she can given her circumstances. On top of recovering from severe effects of neglect and malnourishment, this 27 year old mare is also pregnant. Her body is working hard to pack on weight to protect her from the elements, while simultaneously draining her nutrition and resources to help her baby grow. Our Equine C.A.R.E. team is closely monitoring Odyssia’s condition to ensure she remains well-fed, warm and comfortable until her baby arrives. She will need a lot of rest and tender loving care to prepare for birth, and we will be there for her every step of the way.
