KHS Celebrates Inaugural ASPCA Adopt a Horse Month

The nationwide adoption campaign commences on April 26th, celebrated as Help a Horse Day, and runs through the end of May

The Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) is participating in the first ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) Adopt A Horse Month, a nationwide adoption event taking place throughout the month of May to help more equines find loving homes.

KHS along with over 170 additional equine adoption and rescue groups across the country have joined the campaign to promote the adoptable horses in their care and engage with their communities to raise awareness about equine adoption.

“Derby is just around the corner, and all eyes are on Kentucky for the first Saturday in May,” says Olivia Dixon, KHS Equine Manager. “During Adopt a Horse Month in May, we want to remind Kentuckians that KHS has wonderful adoptable horses looking for new homes. We work with horses of all breeds, personalities and skills, and are happy to help adopters find the right horse for them.”

One of the horses at KHS’ Willow Hope Farm in Simpsonville is Jorja, a Morgan/Thoroughbred cross mare who is 15.1hh tall and 13 years old. She was surrendered to KHS by her owner and was not a rescue. By all accounts, Jorja has been well treated and well-cared for her entire life. She has experience with Prelim Combined Driving, recreational riding, and a bit of low-level dressage work.

Motivated by the results of ASPCA research suggesting there could be approximately 2.3 million adults in the U.S. with both the resources and desire to adopt a horse in need, Adopt a Horse Month is focused on increasing the number of equines adopted across the country.

For those interested in adopting a horse, please visit the KHS website at www.kyhumane.org/adoptable-horses or MyRightHorse.org, the ASPCA’s online adoption platform specifically for equines, to view horses looking for a home.
