East Campus Permanently Closing July 26, 2026

The last day of adoptions at East Campus (EC) is July 26, 2026. Our Sam Swope Pet Treatment and Lifesaving Center remains open for adoptions until we transition to our new campus off Preston Highway in 2027. We hope you’ll visit us at 241 Steedly Drive to find your next furry family member!

The Kentucky Humane Society recently launched the ALL IN Campaign to build a new Animal & Community Campus that will serve even more pets and the people who love them. This campus will have 30% more animal housing, a public veterinary clinic and free pet counseling and resources for thousands of people in need.

We are committed to this transformational project and recently broke ground on the new facility, slated to open in 2027 off Preston Highway near the I-264/I-65 interchange. As a part of the process to get most of our people, animals and programs under one roof, we knew we would sell some of our existing properties in phases.

Over the years, our East Campus has helped thousands of animals find loving homes. Its closure is not a reflection of the incredible work done, but rather a strategic step forward as we prepare for the next chapter of KHS. By selling this property, we are able to put the funds toward a brand new 54,000 square foot facility that will allow us to serve even more animals and people in our community.

FAQs

  • Why is KHS closing East Campus? Closing EC allows KHS to consolidate operations and reduce redundancies. The sale of this property (along with the sales of our Behavior Retreat and Eastpoint Pet Resort) is helping fund our new campus, while the transition prepares KHS to operate more collaboratively, efficiently and sustainably in the years ahead.

  • What happens when EC adoptions end? Adoptions will continue through: Sam Swope Pet TLCPurrfect Day Cafe, increased offsite adoption events, foster-based placements, and more! This transition is being planned carefully to minimize disruption and maintain lifesaving capacity.

  • What will happen to dog training classes and private training? Behavior training remains a core part of KHS’s mission. For now, we plan to continue offering behavior training classes at EC in the basement and at our Sam Swope Pet TLC location. Class instructors will communicate directly with dog training clients on the details of their classes.

  • Where do I send donations? Monetary donations are still gratefully accepted at 1000 Lyndon Lane, Suite B. Members of our administration will continue working in this location and receiving mail here. Physical wish list donations can be dropped off at 241 Steedly Drive. Thank you!

  • How will volunteers be affected? Volunteers continue to be essential to KHS’s work. Some roles or locations will change, but opportunities to stay involved will remain. Adult volunteers (ages 18+) may volunteer at all KHS locations. Click here to learn more. Youth volunteers (age 14-17) also have ways to positively impact shelter animals. Click here to learn more about our youth volunteer opportunities. As always, email [email protected] if you have questions.

  • How are foster services affected? If you are currently utilizing foster services from our East Campus, you’ll continue to do so until the end of July. Fostering services will continue as normal at our Sam Swope Pet TLC location after July 26, 2026. Email [email protected] to learn more.

  • What will happen to the East Campus building? East Campus is currently under contract to be purchased. Proceeds from the sale will help support the construction of our new Animal & Community Campus. The new owner is allowing us to rent space in the basement for administration, development and behavior training staff.

  • What is not changing as a result of this transition? KHS’s mission, values and commitment to animals and the people who love them are not changing. Adoptions will continue, programs will continue, and staff remain central to our work. KHS remains open at 241 Steedly Drive until we transition to our new Animal & Community Campus, and KHS will continue providing lifesaving care, community support and advocacy throughout the transition.

Thank you for your continued support of Kentucky Humane Society. Together, we are building something truly special for the animals and people of Kentucky!
