When our Equine C.A.R.E. team arrived at a property in Franklin County last week to secure 10 severely neglected horses, they noticed three horses that had escaped the property and also needed medical attention. The three remaining horses, two mares and a foal, are currently getting settled in at Willow Hope Farm while they await veterinary attention. For now, they are comfortable and have ready access to grass and water – something they’ve craved for a very long time.

While our hearts break knowing these poor horses have suffered for so long, we are so grateful for the remarkable ways our community has shown up to support them this past week. Our friends from Eleemosynary LLC Inc. were so moved by this rescue that they are generously matching ALL donations up to $15,000. That means when you donate at kyhumane.org/equine/give, your gift will double to impact 2X as many horses in need as they receive the rest, rehabilitation and love they deserve.
10 Horses Rescued from Severe Neglect

Just yesterday, the Kentucky Humane Society Equine C.A.R.E. team received a call requesting assistance relocating 13 neglected horses in Franklin County. Two staff members immediately hit the road so we could collect these horses and bring them to our Willow Hope Farm for medical attention. Upon arrival, we found that recent rainfall created such a muddy mess that parts of this property were impassible. We discovered three of the horses had jumped a fence to a part of the property that we could not access, but thankfully look to be in decent condition and will have access to grass and water in their pasture. It took eight hours, but we were able to corral the other 10 horses and load them into our trailers. Our team has offered to go back for the three remaining horses, and will work with local law enforcement to do so.
Unfortunately, these horses are in terrible condition. Their ribs and spines are visible to the naked eye, and it’s clear they’ve been without proper nutrition and vet care for far too long. We are currently working to get each of these horses vetted and settled into stalls at our Willow Hope Farm so that we can properly assess their needs. For now, they are being provided with nutritious hay and eating under close observation so that we can avoid refeeding syndrome, which occurs when malnourished horses eat too much, too quickly.

No horse should ever have to endure the suffering these 10 horses have. Please donate today and support lifesaving, emergency rescue missions like this one. Thanks to our Board of Directors, all gifts made to KHS before December 31 are being matched up to $35,000, so your donation will impact twice as many animals in need. Together, we can stand behind our Equine C.A.R.E. team as they work to Give Hope to Kentucky horses no matter their needs.
