When Celia arrived at the Kentucky Humane Society, we noticed she wasn’t putting any weight on her front right leg. Worried, our veterinary team immediately took her in for x-rays. What we saw broke our hearts. We discovered that not only was Celia’s leg severely broken but it was also littered with shrapnel. This leads us to believe that this sweet girl was the victim of a gunshot, which ultimately caused her leg to break.
The bullets did irreparable damage to Celia’s leg, and our vet team decided that amputation was the only way to guarantee a full recovery. We performed the surgery yesterday and while Celia is recovering well, her healing journey is not yet over. While performing routine blood tests prior to surgery, we learned that Celia is heartworm positive. So, we immediately started treatment and for now, have her under close observation. We hope this sweet pup will be back on her feet once she is fully healed from heartworms and surgery.
