On Wednesday, June 26, local Humana Employees participated in a volunteer activity with the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS).
Launching in February, KHS’s “Date with a Dog” program allows volunteers the opportunity to take a shelter dog on a field trip for the day. This program takes place at our Sam Swope Pet Retreat, a behavioral rehabilitation center for shelter dogs.
The dates varied with each group of Humana employees. Some took their dogs to walk at a local park, others went for trips to dog-friendly businesses, but many received a “pup cup” from a café. These dates give dogs a break from the shelter environment and provides our team with valuable information about their behavior.
We are appreciative of Humana who gave KHS the opportunity to share what our shelter does for the community and for volunteering their time to help animals at the Pet Retreat. The Humana Foundation’s “Dollars 4 Doers” program hosts a quarterly drawing and winners can designate a $4,000 grant to a nonprofit where a person volunteers.
“The look on our shelter dogs’ faces were priceless as they left for their dates with Humana employees,” said Savannah Gregorchik, KHS Volunteer Manager. “You could see how happy the dogs were, but watching the volunteers get excited about the dates made for a heartwarming experience.
