KHS Assists Kentucky Shelters Impacted by Severe Weather and Flooding

KHS Welcomes Over 30 Animals from Shelters Impacted by Devastating Storms and Flooding

Our hearts go out to all of the communities, people and animals impacted by the storms in Kentucky over the past week. As a loyal KHS supporter, we want you to know how we’re helping animals and people in Kentucky during this time of urgent need. On Thursday morning, our Kentucky Initiatives Director, Kat Rooks, received an urgent call from the Hopkins County Humane Society after high winds and tornado warnings the night before ripped the roof from their shelter. With heavy rain and flooding in the forecast and water pouring into their cat rooms and offices, the shelter faced an immediate crisis. We jumped into action, joining forces with multiple animal rescue groups to get animals relocated and out of harm’s way. Eleven adult cats, two of whom are nursing moms, came to our Sam Swope Pet Treatment and Lifesaving Center that day. But that was only the beginning of this historic flooding, and our work was far from done.

Yesterday morning, KHS once again answered the call – this time from Franklin County Humane Society and Carroll County Animal Shelter. Both needed immediate assistance relocating adoptable dogs to make room for animals displaced by the storms in their own communities. We quickly closed our East Campus to the public and transformed it into an emergency hub where these new arrivals are now decompressing from the trauma they’ve experienced the past week. We also loaded our transport van with food, cat litter and other necessary supplies to support these impacted shelters as best we can. And tomorrow morning, we plan to load another van with critical supplies to drop at Anderson County Animal Services.

Thank you to the BISSELL Pet Foundation who also jumped in to help Kentuckians in this time of need. They helped relocate dogs from Hopkins County Humane Society and responded to the request from the state to support evacuated citizens and their pets in Carroll County.

How to Help

As animal lovers, we know that many of you want to help the people and pets impacted by storms. You can:

Adopt a shelter pet. Adopting an animal at KHS allows us to make space for urgent disaster relief and other animal rescue efforts.

Foster an animal in need. Foster families expand our shelter walls by opening their hearts and homes to shelter animals.  KHS provides all necessary supplies and support for foster caregivers.

Support HopkinsCarroll, Franklin and Anderson County shelters directly. Monetary and supply donations go a long way for these impacted shelters, and directly support the displaced animals they’re caring for as they recover from these traumatic storms.
